| Started out
in show biz as a comedian in the late 1970's, Takeshi Kitano was already
Japan's top entertainer prior to his directorial debut in 1989. His talent
as both "bad boy comic" and virtuoso filmmaker has distinguished
his career like no other in his homeland. On one hand, mind-numbing violence
are the most distinguishing characteristics of his films, but on the other,
the ambience is infused with tranquility, even at the height of brutality.
The effect of sharp contrast casts lights into the inner struggles and
magnifies the intensity, thus building a beautiful drama that relentlessly
grips audience with raw power until the end. |
