Gake no Ue no Ponyo (Ponyo on the Cliff) (2008)

Five-year-old Sosuke lives in a house atop a cliff in a small seaside town. One day he meets a fish named Ponyo who has run away from his home on the back of a jellyfish. From that day forward Ponyo and Sosuke quickly become friends.

However, Ponyo's father--a human who gave up his humanity to be a citizen of the ocean--comes to town to brign back his son. Declaring he wants to "become a human," Ponyo steels the magical power of his father with the help of his sister so that he can return to the side of Sosuke . . .

"Ponyo on the Cliff" is based off of the classic Hans Christian Andersen work "The Little Mermaid," as brought to modern Japan and transformed into a work of friendship and adventure for young children.
