George Lucas and Steven Spielberg may claim filmmakers like Akira Kurosawa, David Lean or John Ford as their inspirations and no doubt they are, but it is master fx artist Ray Harryhausen's cinemagic that inspired them and many others including John Landis, Joe Dante, and Tim Burton as kids, and made them aspire to become filmmakers in the first place. Decades before anyone has heard of CGI effects, he amazed audiences with films like "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad" and "Jason and the Argonauts" which presented fantastical creatures walk, fly and lumber across the big screen. His Dynamation (stop-motion) technique paved the way for later innovations which eventually led to the development of CGI animation, and served as the main source of inspiration for younger generations of special fx artists, including Phil Tippett (creature animator for the new Star Wars series) who credits Harryhausen as the inspiration for his career path itself.
