In 1954, Godzilla made his silverscreen debut in the Toho-produced film directed by Ishiro Honda. The 400 foot (give or take a few feet) radioactive lizard trampled the city of Tokyo in search of his true self, better nuclear waste, and just for the heck of it. Back then, he probably had no idea that he just gave rise to an ever thriving tradition of Suitmation Kaiju films that would be embraced by filmgoers all around the world. Neither had he any idea that his biggest rival would materialize nearly a decade later in the shape of a giant flying turtle. Produced in 1965 by Daiei Studios, Gamera soon became a Kaiju of monstrous popularity and behemoth box office attraction, he starred in nearly as many films as the other big G-man. |
