BATTLEFIELD BASEBALL(JIGOKU KOUSHIEN) w/ English subtitles |
Produced by Ryuhei Kitamura ("Versus," "Azumi"), this action-comedy-horror fun pic was directed by Yudai Yamaguchi, who served as the assistant director to all of Kitamura's previous films, as well as his co-writer for "Versus" and "Alive." It's based on the popular, wacky manga "Jigoku Koushien (Battlefield Stadium)" by Man-Gataro, which is serialised in Shueisha's Monthly Shonen Jump. Think of a baseball version of Stephen Chow's "Shaolin Soccer," mixed with blood and violence of Kinji Fukasaku's "Battle Royale" staged through cartoonish styled fighting, and you'll get a rough idea of this hilarious satire about an "apocalyptic sports" movie that gives an uproarious new spin to the genre formerly typified by "Rollerball's" serious approach. The film stars Tak Sakaguchi of "Versus" fame.
Regular Edition |
A new student - by the name of Yakyu Jubei - is talked into joining the local Seido baseball team by the school's principal for the upcoming tournament. The principal knows well enough about the student's troubled past; about how he's been expelled multiple times from other schools for his erratic and violent behaviour. But there's a reason why he asked the punk kid to join the team, for their first opponent in the tournament is the feared Gedo High team, whose players are known for their brutality. They're most famous for their match-to-the-death approach, and nobody has ever been able to stay alive against them throughout the entire game. However, when the match day comes, Jubei finds himself locked up in a jail cell. With no guarantee that their new "fighter" will show up in time, the Seido team must face the deadly team from Hell! Available as a special limited "Super Tornado Box" edition, and a regular edition.
