- RIP SLYME -

You may already know Rip Slyme. Their song "Super Shooter," a B-side to one of their singles, gathered them some fame abroad when it was used as the intro theme for the animation series "Gantz." What you may not know is that Rip Slyme is perhaps the biggest name in Japanese mainstream hip-hop. In conjunction with the release of their first greatest hits album, "Good Job!" I'd like to tell you why.

First, you might ask exactly how huge is Rip Slyme? You can hear them all over Japan's music programs, during the intro to the animation "Gantz," and in advertisements for Nike and Namco's video game "Tekken 5." In 2005 the single "Galaxy," on which "Super Shooter" was included, garnered them the Best Hip-Hop/R&B video and Best Video of the Year awards at the Space Shower Music Video Awards. This wasn't their first award either, in 2002 they picked up the MTV Best Hip-Hop/Rap and Best New Artist awards as well

Which isn't to say they're a particularly new group. The band got their start in 1993, honing their skills and adding members (topping out at five--four MCs and one DJ) until working with major artists Dragon Ash and getting signed to Warner in 2000. Their time together comes through in their work. Try listening to the freestyled a capella intro to the second track, "By the Way" from their album "Tokyo Classic. Rip Slyme's four MCs--Ryo-Z, Pes. Su, and Ilmari--bounce lines off each other invoking the style of their favorite artists, some of the greatest American hip-hop collectives like The Pharcyde, Jurassic 5, and The Beastie Boys. However, they are more than just authentic, they're wildly, goofily upbeat and fun. That this spirit comes through in their music videos as well as their music is the reason their music videos have repeatedly been at the top of Japan's major music video program playlists. Rip Slyme is an essential band to any fan of Jpop, and a complete eye-opener to the world of Japanese hip-hop. To sum up their twelve years together in one short phrase: "Good Job!" indeed.
