- NOTES -
As the first album "Hover Hover" is welcomed with great surprise and elation, bonobos' second season has taken off! Track 1 "Ano Kotoba, Ano Hikari" is produced by Hirofumi Asamoto. The engineer is Kenichi Yoshimura, known for his work with RYO THE SKYWALKER. The chance meeting of Asamoto, who defines Roots Reggae, and bonobos who are literally the symbol of today's "New-generation Reggae" results in a sound that is both tough and mellow, with lyrics that make you feel slightly nostalgic. In other words, it's bonobos sound at its most original. A dance tune that may even be perfect for the end of your summer, when you realize you've somehow ended up all alone, and you're just crying and dancing at the same craaazy time...

One of the other songs included, "MASSIVE FLOOD" is the band's first tune written by guitarist, Sasaki Yasuyuki. This gives a new twist to bonobos' repertoire. Recorded in Osaka, it was engineered by Koichi Hara who is also responsible for Boredoms and Kururi, among others.

Concerning artworks, the ultra-modern, brilliant photographer Yoshimitsu Umekawa, the illustrator Tomoo Gokita who won the 2001 New York ADC Gold Award for his poster of Michinoku Pro-wrestling, and the graphic director-team ELECROTNIK who also work overseas, are just a few of the amazing crew behind these hits.

History
2001
  • Aug. bonobos comes together as a band. Until then Sai alone had used the name. Gradually the other members, Morimoto, Sasaki, and former drummer Bondo Tsuji (currently with rallypapa&carnegiemama) linked up to form the band.
  • Dec. First concert performance.
2002
  • Spring
Matsui, who had been working at the wansk studio in Osaka, where the band rehearsed, joins the band around this time. Up until then, the band was made up of all "blood type B" members. As a result, the band believes that it experienced a welcoming change in the atmosphere with the arrival of Matsui, a "blood type O" individual. This may sound like complete nonsense, but it is sometimes believed by the Japanese that blood types often play an important role in determining one's personality. Blood type B people are often characterized as pocessing strong individuality, thus the presence of Matsui, a blood type O individual, is said to have softened some tensions.
  • Around this time, the first demo tape is recorded. Songs covered are: "Moujiki Fuyuga Kuru," "Shin Shin Shin" (The cover to "Happy End"), and "Skirt Girl Blues". The tapes are sold at concerts, and they sell at an incredible rate. One of the songs recorded here "Moujiki Fuyuga Kuru" ranks in among the charts of CRJ-west (College Radio Japan West), a station organized by the Kansai area students. It stays at the number one position for several weeks, and goes on to become the overall number one song of 2002. This year also marks the beginning of their vigorous concert activities: opening for EGO-WRAPPIN' or performing with popular bands, COPA SALVO and The Miceteeth. Gradually, bonobos starts to gain wide recognition.
2003
  • April 4th, the demo tape that had once been sold as a cassette is made into an 8cm CD. A limited release of 1000 copies is sold-out immediately.
  • May 28th, from the record label "GALACTIC" of the apparel design label "Or Glory", mini album "Headphone Magic" made up of four songs is released. It becomes instantly popular within the crowd of listeners with an ear for the latest sound.
  • July 30th, a double mix of the four songs in "Headphone Magic" is released in analog version, called "bonobos in bub" from GALACTIC.
  • Oct. 1st Major-label debut on Teenage Symphony/Dreamusic with release of "Moujiki Fuyu Kuru." It gains popularity as the year's winter theme song after receiving much request from radio audience nation-wide.
2004
  • Jan. 1st, second single "water" released.
  • March 31st, first album "Hover Hover" released. After the release of the album, in-store-concerts take place in Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, and Fukuoka. Bonobos fans who had long anticipated this event, as well as passer-bys who were drawn in by the Bonobos groove, all gathered to pack the stores.
  • From April to May, "Tama Tottaru Tour '04" took place in Quattro Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka to celebrate the release of the album. Each event was a major success, owing to the devoted fans who had waited so long for this moment. In every city, over 100 associated personnel showed up to give praise to the band's performance.
