Alice Nine's music continues to evolve and transform, while at the same
time, the band is consistent with their approach. I would like to go over
their latest releases that kick start another tremendous year for the band,
and also for us who are craving for more!
"Kowloon -Nine Heads Rodeo Show," the first 2006 single released
on January 25, is packed with raging guitar sounds, dark and catchy melodies,
and all other components that are essential to their style of rock, in ever
more refined forms.
"Red Carpet Going On," the coupling song, showcases a relentless
rhythm section that seems to overwhelm almost everything else. As you listen
to it, nothing stops the wild rhythm from vibrating through your body.
Two different types of this single are released at the same time, with each
of them featuring a different cover art.
Type-A comes with a bonus DVD including the music video for "Kowloon
-Nine Heads Rodeo Show."
Included with Type-B
is a bonus track, "Senjo ni Hanataba wo," a powerful song that
accelerates until it reaches an explosive and exhilarating crescendo. The
guitars go on a rampage during the ascent, and I really hope the band plays
it live. It's highly recommended.
"Fantasy," released on February 22, is their second 2006 single.
It presents more of the mellow and pop sounds that are also characteristic
of the band. The fantastic lyrics, and the potent tenderness of the vocals
are so satisfying. As the song progresses, the sounds of the instruments
deliver a profound soundscape. Through it all, a dramatic story unfolds
exquisitely.
"Lemon," the coupling song, is another fantastic track that seems
to emerge perfectly with "Fantasy" in continuation of the story.
Just like the first single, two types of this single are released at the
same time, with each of them featuring a different artwork. Type-A includes
a bonus DVD, and Type-B comes with a bonus track.
The bonus DVD for Type-A contains the music video of "Fantasy."
"Tentai Umbrella" is the bonus track that comes with Type-B. Reading
the lyrics of the song, I'm amazed at what a talented lyricist Sho really
is. Listening to it, another story unfolds. The sensitive feelings intertwine
in melancholic angst as Sho sings it.
On February 22, there is another release from Alice Nine. "Akatsuki/Ikuoku
no Chandelier" contains intro and outro themes for the TV anime
series, "Ginyu Mokushiroku: Meine Liebe." Make sure to check it
out as it's another great release packed with the best of the band.
As I've said earlier, 2006 is set to be another tremendous year for Alice
Nine.
On April 26, they will deliver the long-awaited first full length album.
Then in May, they will begin another round of extensive tour, and I'm sure
their excellent performances will get more people obsessed!

Our own original e-mail interview with Alice Nine
- Please introduce yourselves.
Sho: I'm Sho, the singer of the band.
Sho:
Hiroto:
Tora:
Saga:
Nao: Sho: "Akatsuki Ikuoku no Chandelier" is the hardest to sing, because of the high notes. "Lemon," the coupling song of "Fantasy," is my favorite. Hiroto: "Fantasy." For me, the song is emotionally charged. And all three songs on "Kowloon -Nine Heads Rodeo Show" are also my favorites. Make sure to go wild when we play them live. Tora: "Kowloon -Nine Heads Rodeo Show." It rocks! Saga: All of them. Nao: If I need to choose one, then it would be "Ikuoku no Chandelier." Sho: I wanted them to express Alice Nine's extremities, the 2006-style. Hiroto: The concept was to express both ends of our music. Tora: "Kowloon" is heavy, and "Fantasy" is easy to listen to! Saga: "Kowloon" = Red Flame. "Fantasy" = Blue Flame. Nao: The hard, and the pop. Sho: "Kowloon" is similar to "Yami ni Chiru Sakura," and the world view of "Fantasy" is closer to that of "Gin no Tsuki Kuroi Hoshi." Hiroto: They are related in how we approached them. There are similarities, but at the same time, there is a contrast between them. Tora: There is a relationship. All of our songs are Alice Nine. Saga: They are opposite of each other. Nao: The releases are to show the hard and the pop, and they are the body and soul for 2006. Sho: I tried to take each song to a higher level. Personally, I like the melodies that I came up with, and I feel really good about the lyrics. Some of the lyrics have messages, while some of them don't. I set them apart from each other. I also love some of the lyrics that are poetic. Hiroto: When recording them, I did not make any compromise at all. Personally, I played the guitar to make sure that my emotions and feelings are put into every aspect of the music, and I want people to feel that. Tora: Basically, it was a mixture of the heavy and the crunchy sounds. Saga: I was really into making sure that there would be a common ground for all types of the songs. Nao: This time, I tried to expand our music, to let a new aspect of Alice Nine to shine through. Sho: accent, emotion, heart Hiroto: nuances and emotions Tora: Rhythm Saga: thick groove, pronounced bass Nao: To make hard songs harder, and to try to not make the simple songs too simple. Sho: When Saga is around, it's a comedy show everyday (laughs). Hiroto: Everyday, we recorded hard, from noon until about 8:00 in the morning the next day. Through it all I lost a lot weight, about 5kg. Tora: There was a Dreamcast console in the studio, and I played for some time (laughs). Saga: To make sure the nuances come out right, I altered the tuning of my bass for different parts of the same songs. It required quite a bit of work... Nao: During the recording, we worked hard without getting enough sleep, and after a while, and our minds were almost in trance (laughs). Sho: A long time ago, a friend of mine
had tragically passed away, and it was not possible for me to cope
with it so easily. I came up with the melody and the lyrics for "Fantasy"
when I was struggling to come to terms with the loss. Also, Hiroto
was inspired by how the stars fade away from the sky at dawn when
he wrote the music, and I tried to express that image as a poem. Hiroto: I wrote the music for "Fantasy" when I was outside at night, looking up at the stars. During the arrangement, I simply followed my feelings. Tora: Inspirations always come when I am in the middle of doing something of no importance. Saga: Everything will be OK as long as I come up with one phrase. Nao: I arranged them by imagining the world view of each song. Sho: Hiroto, who wrote the music, loves
stars, and I love stars, too. I thought of "Fantasy" sort
of as an alternate ending of the same story. Sho: The song really is a love song
that tells a decadent story of a man who lives for the moment, and
yet dies of illness. He longs to meet again the girl he loves. It's
actually about the simple and pure bittersweetness of love. Also,
when I imagined the hospital room, there was a lemon in it, and these
things connected. Sho: For "Kowloon" video,
the theme is an oppressed child in a locked room trying to reach out
for the light outside. The stars, dawn, and a boy are the themes for
"Fantasy" and it's also a collage of people's interpretations
about such themes. The lyrics are a bit serious, you know. Tora: In "Kowloon" video, a child is saved in the mountains. Saga: "Kowloon" is aggressive. "Fantasy" is stylish. Nao: The music video for "Kowloon" is opaque, and it looks really cool. "Fantasy" video is simple and really stylish. I hope people enjoy the videos in perfect synch with the music. Sho: We play the music with our souls, and there is nothing else to it. How hard we played, and how crisp we were, are the highlights. Hiroto: Everything is the highlight. Alice Nine at that moment, and the heat of the people who were there that day are all packed in it. So, it's everything. Tora: There are a lot of highlights, including parts where we cried (laughs). Saga: Characters of each of us, and the songs that are best to experience live. Nao: It is packed with tears and laughs, and completely captures Alice Nine. I really hope a lot of people get a chance to watch the DVD. Sho: "Red Carpet Going On" would be it. It's a party tune. Hiroto: "Kowloon" and "Red Carpet Going On." "Kowloon" is for toasting people, and "Red Carpet Going On" is for making people go wild. Tora: "Kowloon -Nine Heads Rodeo Show" Saga: "Red Carpet Going On" Nao: "Kowloon -Nine Heads Rodeo Show." It's an excellent song to be performed live!! Sho: I really want to tour a lot. I want the band to express music through all five senses. Hiroto: I want to continue to do things that only Alice Nine can do. Tora: We'll just charge forward! Saga: More evolution. Nao: 2006 will be a year in which our bounds are expanded. Sho: It will be another swinging year, and we'll keep on giving it all we've got. Please come running after us hard. See you! Hiroto: Together we'll go far. Tora: Thank you for supporting us. Alice Nine will write more great songs, and we look forward to seeing you all! Saga: Let's all be sexier, at the stage right in particular. Nao: Together, let's continue to make the music scene more exciting! |
