In an alternate universe, mysterious Genju beasts materialized on Earth in 1945 and began hunting down humans. After 50 years of endless battles against the

invaders, the humans appear to be on the brink of extinction. However, they have now developed humanoid type weapons called the HWTs (Humanoid Walking Tanks). The problem is, majority of people in their 20's and 30's have lost their lives in the battles, and in desperation for survival, high school kids are now recruited to board these big HWTs to combat the beasts. Unit 5121 consists of these high school kids, and the story follows their adventures.

Composer Kenji Kawai is known for his work on such anime classics as Patlabor and the Ghost in the Shell features, and Ranma 1/2 among others.
