It's been two years since the final battle. Though once the center of mako production, Midgar has fallen from the heights of prosperity into ruin. Its citizens slowly walk the road to reconstruction, however a strange illness called geostigma torments them. Without a cure, those afflicted with geostigma die one after another. Just as the people of Midgar were regaining their hope, they are threatened by a new menace.

Cloud lives a quiet life running a delivery service with his orphaned friends but his heart is still troubled by the important people he lost in the last battle. A deep sense of guilt and personal punishment shuts his heart off from the world.

One day, Cloud receives a single phone call--a request for work. The call is from a man named Kadaj, who would like to send Cloud on a guarding mission. Now Cloud must protect Kadaj and his young, brutal associates.

Soon the danger that surrounds Kadaj envelops the orphans that live with Cloud.

What is Kadaj's purpose? And why is he after Cloud?

Cloud fears an unavoidable battle. Will his sins be forgiven?
Conflicted, he eventually strengthens his resolve for battle.

And finally the curtain is drawn on Cloud's super-natural battle with Kadaj.
