2024年、没後90年を迎えるエドワード・エルガー (1857-1934)、究極の2枚組ベスト!! エドワード・エルガー (1857-1934)について: 近代イギリスを代表する作曲家エルガーは、オルガニストの父と、芸術好きの母の間に生まれ、自然に音楽に親しみつつ、10歳の頃から作曲を始めている。正規の音楽教育をほとんど受けていないにも関わらず、地方の楽隊長や教会オルガニストを経て、1989年にロンドンで作曲活動を開始する。1896年のカンタータ「オラフ王の伝説への場面」で初めて成功を収めたエルガーの名声を決定づけた作品が、1899年の「エニグマ変奏曲」だった。翌1900年にはオラトリオ「ジャロンティアスの夢」をドイツで披露。この出来事は、ヘンリー・パーセル (1659-1695)以来、絶えて大作曲家を生み出すことのなかったイギリスにおいて大きな話題となり、エルガーは一躍"時の人"となる。チェロ協奏曲&ヴァイオリン協奏曲や2曲の交響曲のほか、「愛の挨拶」「朝の歌」などの美しい小品を含む、数多くの名作を遺したエルガーを語る上で欠かせない作品が、行進曲「威風堂々」。ロンドンの夏に開催される世界最大級の音楽祭「BBCプロムス」の「ラストナイト」に大合唱を交えて演奏されるこの曲は、「希望と栄光の国」と呼ばれて愛されてきた名曲中の名曲。(2024年2月田中泰)

There are 6 region codes. Typically, DVD players sold in one region is compatible only with DVD titles that are encoded for that region.

HD DVD

HD DVDs titles are playable only on HD DVD players. They are not playalbe on conventional DVD players or Blu-ray players. On the other hand, Twin Format disc has a layer that is playable also on conventional DVD players. Such titles are indicated as "Format: HD DVD Twin Format" in item details page. *We'll add accurate information on regional encoding as they become available, but for the time-being, please assume that HD DVD titles available at CDJapan are encoded for Region-2.

Blu-ray

Blu-ray titles are playable only on Blu-ray players. They are not playable on conventional DVD players or HD DVD players. There are 3 region codes for Blu-rays as listed below, which are different from DVD region codes.

SACD (Super Audio CD)

SACDs are playable only on SACD players, and will not play on regular CD players. On the other hand, SACD Hybrid disc has a layer that is playable also on regular CD payers. Such titles are indicated as "Format: SACD-Hybrid" in item details page.
