Description

[Machine Translation] [A beautiful and dreamy Gion no Yawa (A Gion Night Tale) is set in Gion at the end of the Edo period. A beautiful dream-like Gion nocturne. --On the 17th day of the 7th month of the first year of the Genji Era, the evening is dark and steamy, and the lights are dimly lit by a square andon lantern. Tomi (Sanjo Rikie), a Gion woman who was born in a brothel, became a maiko, then a geisha, and is now the proprietress of Matsuyoshi, a tea house, listens to the shabby sounds of a country tycoon's sake party leaking from the second floor, and worries about the gradual decline of Matsuyoshi. Tomi's daughter, Akira (Hanai Ranko), thinks of the Choshu samurai and feels hopeful about the start of a new era. Amidst the roar of artillery fire, Tomi is taken away by the Shinsengumi under unclear suspicion. The streets of Gion are in turmoil as people flee, abandoning their possessions. Akira evacuates the women of Matsuyoshi, but says he will stay here and wait for Tomi's return. Set on the night of the Hamagurimi-gomon Incident, this is a unique drama that depicts the great flow of the times from the women's perspective.

[東宝DVD名作セレクション] 幕末の祇園を舞台にした京都異色篇。美しい夢のような祇園夜話。――元治元年七月十七日、角行燈がぼんやり蒸暑い闇に浮かぶ宵。廓で生まれ舞妓から芸者になり、今はお茶楼「まつ由」のお女将となった祇園の女・とみ (三條利喜江) は、二階から漏れ聞こえる田舎大尽の侘しい酒宴のさんざめきを聞きながら、次第に没落してゆく「まつ由」の姿を憂いている。とみの娘・あきら (花井蘭子) は、長州の志士に思いをはせ、新時代の胎動に希望を感じていた。砲撃の音が轟く中、はっきりしない嫌疑をかけられたとみが、新撰組に連行される。遂に幕府と長州は一線を交えたのか、家財を捨てて逃げ出す人々で祇園の街は混乱していた。あきらは「まつ由」の女たちを避難させるが、自分はここに留まり、とみの帰りを待つと言い出すのだった・・・。蛤御門の変の一夜を舞台に、大きな時代の流れを女たちの視線で描いた異色の人間ドラマ。

There are 6 region codes. Typically, DVD players sold in one region is compatible only with DVD titles that are encoded for that region.

Blu-ray

Blu-ray titles are playable only on Blu-ray players. They are not playable on conventional DVD players or HD DVD players. There are 3 region codes for Blu-rays as listed below, which are different from DVD region codes.
