The script is written by Yoshiko Morishita, who has produced numerous masterpieces with her meticulous portrayal of characters, including serial TV novels, historical dramas, and Drama 10. Ryusei Yokohama makes his NHK drama debut as Tsutaya Shigezaburo, a man who laid the foundations of Japan's media industry and pop culture, and who pursued the pursuit of fun even when the authorities sometimes took notice of him. The role of Gennai Hiraga, a rare genius, is played by Ken Yasuda, Tsutashige's childhood friend and legendary courtesan Hananai (Segawa V) is played by Fuka Koshiba, Tsutashige's foster parent Surugaya is played by Katsumi Takahashi, Inari Tanuma is played by Ken Watanabe, and the story is narrated by Haruka Ayase as Kurosuke Inari. In the mid-18th century, the population of Edo (now Tokyo) exceeded one million, and the city developed into one of the largest cities in the world during the period of peace and prosperity. Tsutaya Shigesaburo, a.k.a. Tsutajige, was born to poor commoners in Yoshiwara, a suburb of Edo, and was separated from his parents at an early age. Tsutajige, who was brought up in the midst of human ties that transcended blood ties, started out as a book-lending shop and later started a book editing and publishing business. At the same time, Edo culture was flourishing in the free atmosphere created by the powerful man of the time, Iniji Tanuma, and a wide variety of literary figures such as Gennai Hiraga were produced. At the age of 33, Tsutajige opened a store in Nihonbashi, the center of commerce, and rose to become the "Publishing King of Edo. Tsutajige discovered the talents of such young and unique individuals as Utamaro Kitagawa, Kyoden Sando, Hokusai Katsushika, Bakin Kyokutei, and Ikku Jippensha. Many of them later became masters and laid the foundation of Japanese culture. However, times changed, and Iniji Tanuma lost his position. During the Kansei Reforms led by Matsudaira Sadanobu, who replaced him, Tsutajige's liberality and political satire were called into question, and he was punished by having half of his property confiscated.
