The novel was the subject of controversy and criticism by conservative people who demanded that it be removed from libraries because of its content. The film's story is told in a non-linear fashion and was described upon its premiere as "one of the most daring, original, and fascinating films ever made." In addition to winning the Jury Prize at the 1972 Cannes Film Festival, the film also won the Hugo Award, the oldest and most prestigious award in science fiction, and the Saturn Award, a prestigious award for science fiction films. The film was also awarded the Saturn Prize, the most prestigious science fiction film award. He is the director of "Shoot for Tomorrow" ('69) and "Sting" ('70). ('69), Sting ('73), and Garp's World ('82), and the music is by Glenn Gould, the composer known for his Goltberg Variations.
