Description

[Machine Translation] Uzaki Ryudo of the Downtown Boogie Woogie Band makes his first full-fledged film appearance. Director Yasuzo Masumura's masterpiece depicts in a tense and dramatic space the passionate feelings of two people who are determined to do what is right in their hearts. --In the 16th year of the Genroku era (1688) in Osaka. Tokubei, a handyman at Hiranoya, a soy sauce wholesaler, refuses a marriage proposal offered by his uncle Kyuemon, the owner of Hiranoya. Tokubei had already promised to marry O-Hatsu, a courtesan of the Tenmaya family, to whom he had promised to marry. Angered, Kyuemon demanded that Tokubei return the two pieces of silver he had given to his stepmother, Osai, by the seventh of the following month. After persuading Osai to return the silver, Tokubei is begged by his acquaintance Kuheiji, who is waiting for him in front of Hiranoya, to lend him the two pieces of silver... Director Yasuzo Masumura, who pursued the image of a woman willfully living against an oppressive environment in his program pictures, adapted Chikamatsu Monzaemon's masterpiece of ningyo joruri (puppet drama), known for the dokyoubun (Remnants of this World, Remnants of the Night). Meiko Kaji's performance as Ohatsu was critically acclaimed and won numerous awards. The film received numerous awards and accolades, including the Kinema Junpo Best Ten Award for Best Actress in 1978, the Kinema Junpo Award for Best Actress in 1978, the Mainichi Film Concours for Best Actress in a Japanese Film in 1978, and the Blue Ribbon Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in 1978.

Blu-ray

Blu-ray titles are playable only on Blu-ray players. They are not playable on conventional DVD players or HD DVD players. There are 3 region codes for Blu-rays as listed below, which are different from DVD region codes.
