Description

[Machine Translation] [Amakusa Shiro Tokisada stands reflected in the bonfire of youth. Amakusa Shiro led tens of thousands of peasants under the oppressive rule of Christianity and holed himself up in Hara Castle for the glory of God and for the sake of his loved ones. (Released in the midst of the frustration of the 1960s, this period epic caused a stir in the Japanese film, broadcasting, and mass media worlds, and became a major topic of conversation. The cast includes Hashizo Okawa as Shiro Amakusa, Sayuri Tachikawa as his lover, Ryutaro Otomo as Shinbei Oka, a close friend of Shiro Amakusa, Taro Mikuni as a fallen Christian, Satomi Oka, Mikijiro Hira, Minoru Chiaki, Yoshi Kato, Choichiro Kawarazaki, Tokuei Hanazawa, Kei Sato, and many others. The film is an ambitious epic that leaves a strong impression with the beauty of dark images that director Nagisa Oshima intentionally sought. --Under the rule of Tokugawa Iemitsu, the Christian peasants of Shimabara Amakusa suffered from the oppression of their faith by the shogunate, which could be described as tyranny, and from heavy annual tribute. Shiro, who was deeply devoted to Christianity and had renounced the samurai warrior's life, was in hiding with his comrades in anticipation of the day when he and his comrades would rise up against the Shogunate, but in the meantime the Christians were being cruelly executed by "cold water immersion" and "Mino Dance". The peasants, who saw the scene, blamed Shiro for not doing anything about it.

HD DVD

HD DVDs titles are playable only on HD DVD players. They are not playalbe on conventional DVD players or Blu-ray players. Blu-ray

Blu-ray titles are playable only on Blu-ray players. They are not playable on conventional DVD players or HD DVD players. There are 3 region codes for Blu-rays as listed below, which are different from DVD region codes.

SACD (Super Audio CD)

SACDs are playable only on SACD players, and will not play on regular CD players. On the other hand, SACD Hybrid disc has a layer that is playable also on regular CD payers. Such titles are indicated as "Format: SACD-Hybrid" in item details page.
