Description

[Machine Translation] [Based on an original story by Norio Nanjo, Kinnosuke Nakamura and master director Tadashi Imai depict the history of bloody loyalty with an unusually cruel touch, telling the genealogy of the samurai spirit that has remained strong in the Japanese people through seven episodes in seven generations from the Edo period to the present day. Nakamura Kinnosuke gives a powerful performance as the protagonist of the seven generations of the Iikura family, and co-stars Ineko Arima, Yoshiko Mita, and Satomi Oka also give strong performances. Imai's brilliant direction won the Golden Bear Award at the 13th Berlin Film Festival. --Susumu Iikura, an office worker at a construction company, is engaged to his fiancee, Kyoko Hitomi, who commits suicide by using sleeping pills. Upon receiving the news, Susumu recalls the cruel history written in his ancestor's diary. The diary contained stories of generations of the Iikura family, a warrior family that sacrificed themselves to serve their lord and country. Jirozaemon committed seppuku (ritual suicide) in defense of his lord, Sajiemon committed suicide by harakiri (ritual suicide) in defense of samurai loyalty, Kyutaro was accused of wrongdoing and had his penis castrated, Shuzo offered his beloved daughter to the old lord, Shingo was killed in the Sino-Japanese War, and Osamu, Shin's brother, served in World War II as a suicide pilot. And now, for the sake of his company and his career, Susumu used Kyoko, who works for a rival company, to drive her to suicide. He is horrified to realize that he is about to repeat the cruel history of the Iikura family...

HD DVD

Blu-ray

Blu-ray titles are playable only on Blu-ray players. They are not playable on conventional DVD players or HD DVD players. There are 3 region codes for Blu-rays as listed below, which are different from DVD region codes.

SACD (Super Audio CD)

SACDs are playable only on SACD players, and will not play on regular CD players. On the other hand, SACD Hybrid disc has a layer that is playable also on regular CD payers. Such titles are indicated as "Format: SACD-Hybrid" in item details page.
