[Machine Translation] [The story is about a revenge revenge on the opposite side of the family, which is particularly famous among the only three cases of "katarenga" out of the one hundred and ten recorded cases of "avenging" during the 265 years from Keicho 10 to Genji 1. Director Masahiro Makino took on the dark world of avenging in this uniquely ambitious epic. --In the fifth year of the Shotoku Era, a windy late spring in Koriyama Castle, Yamato, Japan. Den'hachiro Ikuta, a martial arts instructor in the Honda family, loses a decision to the younger Sozaemon at a martial arts tournament held by the feudal lord Honda Tadanao, and is banned from service. Den'hachiro's wife and adoptive father are ruthless and kick him out of the house, and he is insulted by Sozaemon's arrogant pride in winning the tournament. Den'hachiro, who works for Manzo, the head of the Okinaka clan in Namba, receives news that Sozaemon's brother is on his way to avenge his brother's death. Den'hachiro takes pity on the vanity of the feudal lord and decides to be avenged, and goes to Sozenji Temple in the early morning. However, the brothers are cruelly beaten back by a group of foot soldiers assembled by Okatsu, the daughter of Manzo, who is in love with Den'hachi'ro. Then their adoptive father appears as Denchichiro's second best fighter. Otomo Ryutaro gives an impassioned performance as Den'hachiro, a tragic man who is caught between a samurai's spirit and a woman's single-mindedness, and ends up in a frenzy.

[東映創立70周年記念 第2弾] 慶長十年から元治元年までの二百六十五年間、"仇討"の記録百十件のうち、"返り討"となった僅か三件の中でも特に有名な逆縁仇討の物語。マキノ雅弘監督が、暗澹たる世界に挑んだ異色の野心大作である。――正徳五年、風薫る晩春の大和・郡山城。本多家武術師範・生田伝八郎は、藩主・本多忠直が開催した武芸大会で若輩の宗左衛門に判定負けを喫し、お役御免となる。妻と養父に非情な態度で家を追い出された伝八郎は、傲然と勝ち誇る宗左衛門に侮辱を受け、武士の意地と斬り捨て難波へ去る。難波・沖仲士の頭・万造のもとで働く伝八郎に「宗左衛門の兄弟が仇討に向かう」という報が届く。藩主の虚栄に不憫と思い討たれることを決意した伝八郎は、早暁の崇禅寺に行く。だが、伝八郎に恋心を抱く万造の娘・お勝が集めた人足達に兄弟は無残な返り討ちとなる。そして伝八郎の二番手討ち手として養父が現れる。主演・大友柳太朗が、武士の意気地と女心の一途さに挟まれ、最後には狂乱してしまう悲運の男・伝八郎を熱演。

HD DVD

HD DVDs titles are playable only on HD DVD players. They are not playalbe on conventional DVD players or Blu-ray players. On the other hand, Twin Format disc has a layer that is playable also on conventional DVD players. Such titles are indicated as "Format: HD DVD Twin Format" in item details page. *We'll add accurate information on regional encoding as they become available, but for the time-being, please assume that HD DVD titles available at CDJapan are encoded for Region-2.

Blu-ray

Blu-ray titles are playable only on Blu-ray players. They are not playable on conventional DVD players or HD DVD players. There are 3 region codes for Blu-rays as listed below, which are different from DVD region codes.

SACD (Super Audio CD)

SACDs are playable only on SACD players, and will not play on regular CD players. On the other hand, SACD Hybrid disc has a layer that is playable also on regular CD payers. Such titles are indicated as "Format: SACD-Hybrid" in item details page.
