Byakuya no Okami [CD+DVD]Takeshi KitayamaByakuya no OkamiI just love Byakuya no Okami. Take-chan is so handsome and manly. We were hoping he would have his Birthday Live concert next year but I guess he is busy with the other concerts. We really enjoyed his Birthday Live concert this year. I just loved his singing of Byakuya no Okami at the NHK Kayo Concert. He was just awesome and fabulous! I have it on DVR so I can see him every night or whenever I want to.

Yuki Maeda Zenkyokushu -Kenchana-Yuki MaedaOne of the finest albums from H!P ever!I've been listening lately to a lot of Hibari Misora, the "Queen of Enka," so I was quite happy to hear about this album from Yuki Maeda, the one singer I know of who could even remotely be considered the heir to Misora's title. I've been listening to Yuki for years, but only when she's been featured in a larger Hello! Project concert or when her singles and music videos are included in H!P's annual Petit Best collections. (She was sadly absent from last year's Petit Best 10.) Even though she's been performing for ten years, this is, surprisingly, her first CD album. And it's a great one. One beautiful song after another for a total of 16 tracks. Some of them are clearly enka songs, described by journalist Mark Schilling in The Encyclopedia of Japanese Pop Culture as "sad, soulful Japanese ballads." Others have more of a pop inflection, while still being enka-flavored. Some hark back to folkloric "matsuri" (festival) songs. In track 14, "Kaze Kaikyou," Yuki even vocalizes drum sounds. My favorites are the ones with the most interesting background music. #7, "Sarasara no Kawa," has lovely melodious flute accompaniment. #8, "Nishi Shinjuku de Atta Hito," has soft guitar accompaniment. #11, "Kaeri Sobireta Furusato wa," is just an achingly beautiful enka song and arguably the best on the CD. #13, "Tsuki Ressha," features guitar and an instrument that sounds a little like an accordion, but nicer. #15, "Zanza Koi Shigure," is a soft, gentle song with evocative string accompaniment. I don't know if the music is live or, like most H!P recordings, conjured up on a keyboard and then played back for the vocalist. I'm guessing some scores are "canned," while others are live. I wouldn't have minded an upbeat song or two. Track 5, "Tokyo, Yoimachigusa," comes the closest, offering a festival song with traditional inflections, but a somewhat fast beat and electric guitar, a very nice mix of old and new. (The music, however, sounds canned.) #6, "Tokyo Kirigirisu," is more of a pop song, with a pleasant beat, but I can't help recalling how Yuki stepped up to the plate when she was part of Salt5 in 2003 and they performed H!P's sole hiphop anthem, "Get Up! Rapper." Yuki worked it. In any event, this long-awaited album is as full of riches as I'd hoped it to be and occupies a special niche in my J-pop collection. I just hope we won't have to wait ten years for the next one.

Genkai FunautaKiyoshi HikawaGood purchaseEnka videos often lack originality but this DVD is pretty cool, since Kiyoshi is so sympathetic and his video is very well shot and energic (let alone the song itself, which deserves a review on it own). Of course this DVD doesn't feature any extra content (only Genkai Funauta's PV and its karaoke version) like some others artists do with a making of for example, but it's still a good purchase for Hikawa's fans.

Seishun Uta Nenkan Enka Kayo Hen 1970 Nendai BestV.A.Quite...possibly the best CD I've ever bought! At first I didn't know what to expect and to tell the truth I had only bought the CD for Tetsuya Watari's Kuchinashi no Hana. I did however listen to the whole CD and it has got such a great selection of talented artists on it. For a varied view on 70's enka, you should nae must buy this CD

Meiko Kaji Zenkyoku Shu (incl. "Urami Bushi" from the movie "Kill Bill Vol. 1")Meiko Kajigood depressing musicI bought this just from hearing the track from kill bill which says a lot right from the get go. I don't think it's all that special in terms of music from that era but it does what it does very well. I really like her for her though. I mean like her character is very interesting to me the way she sings it draws me in. Beware though, lyrics are pretty depressing... still buy it ;P

Meiko Kaji Zenkyoku Shu (incl. "Urami Bushi" from the movie "Kill Bill Vol. 1")Meiko KajiStruck me hard with powerful vocalsIt was Quentin Tarantino who introduce me to her music while watching the snow fighting scene in his movie "Kill Bill". Since then, I've been a fan of Japan Pop music and even more....

Kawa no Nagare no youni / Ai SansanHibari MisoraThe Last, But The BestIf you ask most people in Japan who they think the greatest Enka singer of all time is, they would say Misora Hibari. This disc contains two songs: "Kawa No Nagare No You Ni" and "Ai San San." Both are absolutely beautiful and have great melodies. "Kawa No Nagare No You Ni" was Misora's last hit song before she died, thus it is counted as one of the greatest Japanese hits of all time. I would definitely recommend buying this disc. Not only does it contain two classic hit songs, but it also contains karaokes, so you can sing along. Who could ask for more?
