Japanese Universal Music follows their excellent "My Generation Box" with an equally superb "A Quick One Box". Like on the earlier box, you get the mono album + bonus tracks on Disc one, and the stereo album + bonus tracks on Disc two. The mastering of the mono album is the best ever,and many of the bonus tracks on the mono disc are significant upgrades(especially "Happy Jack" & "Substitute"). You also get a previously unreleased instrumental version of "Batman". The stereo disc is generally good, though unlike the presently available expanded "A Quick One" CD, which has remixes of 6 of the 10 songs, here the album is presented entirely via original 1960's stereo mixes, which means(somewhat) lower fidelity than the remixes. Compiler/remastering engineer Jon Astley admits that Kit Lambert's production style(in 1966) involved harsh midrange and compressed sound, and he has opted not to change that. However, when presenting the 1990's remixes of the "Ready Steady Who" E.P. tracks(the original mono mixes are on Disc One), Astley has opted to increase midrange harshness to make them match with the harsh sound on the "A Quick One" stereo album mixes. But the result is harsh, metallic, digitally generated distortion on "Batman" & "Bucket T", which damages the music. "Bucket T", (perhaps the worst-recorded WHO song) doesn't need added distortion Yes, you can now throw away your original European "a Quick One" mono CD, but hold onto your stereo expanded/remastered CD for its' 6 exclusive remixes("Run Run Run","Boris The Spider","I Need You","Cobwebs & Strange","So Sad About Us" & "Heatwave") The packaging of this box set is superb with CD-sized reproductions of 7 L.P. covers & 20 single & E.P. sleeves from around the world, all printed with attention to detail, such as paper stock, fabrication technique and texture. And there's plenty of rarities amongst the bonus tracks including the second version of "Circles"(original B-side of "Substitute") and an alternate take of "Substitute" with some different lyrics("I try walking forward, but my feet walk back", instead of "I look All white,but my dad was black") After the release of this box, it is safe to say that there is no further unreleased material from 1966.
Fantastic box set, beautiful repo sleeves,Well thought out set as only the japanse do, sounds great, a little expensive but you've gotta have it (haven't you !)
