A commemorative project for "100 Years of the NHK Symphony Orchestra." Wolfgang Sawallisch first guest-conducted the NHK Symphony Orchestra in 1964 to great acclaim and was appointed honorary conductor in 1967. He continued to conduct the orchestra until 2004, his final visit to Japan, becoming an indispensable presence in Japan's classical music world. Performances by this partnership were widely introduced through NHK broadcasts, but the only session recordings made for record release are Beethoven's Symphonies No. 5 and No. 8, recorded in Niiza in May 1982, marking 15 years since his appointment as honorary conductor, for RVC, the joint venture between RCA in the U.S. and Victor Company of Japan (DISC 1). Five years later, Brahms's Symphony No. 1 was recorded live by CBS/Sony at a subscription concert at NHK Hall. Known as a passionate and intense performance, it is presented together with "Death and Transfiguration," the only recording of the work in Sawallisch's career. As an authority on R. Strauss, Sawallisch captures a special sense of exaltation in this performance (DISC 2). The recordings were handled respectively by veteran engineers Masaki Ono and Tomoo Suzuki, fully capturing the clear, Germanic sound characteristic of the NHK Symphony Orchestra at the time. - 2-disc Hybrid CD set / Onsho label coating / multi-case / wraparound obi.

「N響100年」記念企画。1964年にN響に初めて客演して大きな成果を収め、1967年に名誉指揮者に就任したヴォルフガング・サヴァリッシュ。最後の来日となった2004年までN響を指揮、日本の音楽界に欠かせぬ存在となりました。このコンビの演奏はNHKの放送を通じて広く紹介されていましたが、レコード発売を目的としたセッション録音は、名誉指揮者就任15年となる1982年5月に新座で収録された、米RCAと日本ビクターの合弁会社RVCへのベートーヴェンの交響曲第5番・第8番の2曲が残されるのみ(DISC 1)。その5年後にCBSソニーによってNHKホールの定期公演でライヴ収録されたブラームスの交響曲第1番は気迫漲る熱演として知られ、R.シュトラウスの権威だったサヴァリッシュ生涯唯一の録音となった「死と変容」と共に特別な高揚感を記録しています(DISC 2)。それぞれ大野正樹、鈴木智雄という熟練のエンジニアが収録を手掛け、当時のN響らしい明晰かつドイツ的なサウンドが余すところなく捉えられています。■ハイブリッド盤CD2枚組 / 音匠レーベル仕様 / マルチケース / クルミタスキ
