ELGAR & CHADWICK: Works

[Machine Translation] Andrew Constantine conducts the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in this 2-CD set of two different versions of Elgar's symphonic study Falstaff. Many composers, including Verdi and Nicolai, have adapted Shakespeare's "The Merry Wives of Windsor" play featuring the stately knight Falstaff into an opera, but Elgar depicts the story with orchestra only, without using songs. In this recording, we can compare the performance with the reading of Shakespeare's original with the orchestral performance alone, allowing us to carefully enjoy the origins of the work. Also included in this recording is Chadwick's "Tamoshanter. This piece is based on a poem by Robert Burns, and tells the story of the main character called "Tam of Shanta," who is entangled with a witch in a tavern and escapes with his life. This one includes a track in which Chadwick reads his own introduction to the work. A delightful album, uniquely British.

アンドリュー・コンスタンティンが指揮するBBCウェールズ・ナショナル管弦楽団によるエルガーの交響的習作「ファルスタッフ」の2つの異なるヴァージョンを収録した2枚組。シェイクスピアの「ウィンザーの陽気な女房たち」に登場する体格のよい騎士 (ならずもの)ファルスタッフを主人公にした戯曲は、ヴェルディやニコライなど多くの作曲家が歌劇に仕立てているが、エルガーは歌を用いることなく、オーケストラのみで物語を描いている。この録音では、シェークスピア原作の朗読を挿入した演奏と、オーケストラのみの演奏を比べることができ、作品の成り立ちをじっくりと楽しむことができる。併せて収録されているのはチャドウィックの「タモシャンター」。こちらはロバート・バーンズの詩を原作にした曲で、"シャンタのタム"と呼ばれる主人公が、酒場で魔女に絡まれ、命からがら逃げだしたというお話。こちらはチャドウィックが起こした作品紹介を朗読したトラックも含まれている。イギリスならではの楽しいアルバム。
