Description
SACD
About half a year after the release of the timeless classic *John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman*, here is a masterpiece by Johnny Hartman-an album that, though often overshadowed by that classic, has been quietly shining with its own distinctive charm. Backed by New York's top-tier musicians, the recording was produced by the renowned Van Gelder at his studio. His rich, soft, and deep vocals are brought back to life here through a new mastering from the original tape.
- A Super Audio CD Hybrid Release Featuring Esoteric's Unparalleled Attention to Detail
ESOTERIC's classic reissue series continues to receive high acclaim for its relentless commitment to the original master sound and the overwhelming improvement in sound quality achieved through Super Audio CD hybrid technology. We have DSD-mastered these albums-which have been hailed as definitive classics since their release and have never disappeared from the catalog to this day-using technology and artistic sensibility evolved from the original masters, achieving the world's first Super Audio CD hybrid format. This time, we are releasing Super Audio CD hybrid editions of legendary performances and recordings representative of the analog era, selected from the Impulse! label's catalog.
- A one-of-a-kind vocal style-soft, gentle, and brimming with boundless, profound emotion
Previously, Esoteric released this masterpiece of jazz vocal music as part of the 6-disc jazz set *impulse! 6 GREAT JAZZ* (ESSI-90133/38) . Singer Johnny Hartman, who shot to fame with this legendary performance, recorded *I Just Dropped By to Say Hello* about half a year later. This album, which showcases his soft, warm, and captivating personality at its finest, is one of Hartman's masterpieces. His captivating baritone voice is truly one-of-a-kind. Centered on the expressiveness of his low register, Hartman's voice carries the melody smoothly; it is soft and gentle, brimming with boundless emotion.
Johnny Hartman (July 1923-September 1983), the owner of that velvety, smooth, soft, and deep "velvet voice," was a male singer classified within the genre known as "crooners." The crooner genre, which includes such legendary singers as Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, and Perry Como, is characterized by a soft, conversational style that seems to whisper rather than project a loud voice on stage. Even within this world-which is said to have produced many musicians alongside the development of microphones and records-Johnny Hartman stood apart from the popular singers backed by large orchestras; he was a singer with a solid foundation rooted in jazz.
- The sound has been completely transformed by the new mastering-please listen closely to the rich nuances of his voice
Although this is a classic album from the 1960s, this is the first time it has been released as a Super Audio CD hybrid. We have remastered it from the original master specifically for Super Audio CD. As always, we carried out this work without compromise, from the selection of the master to the final DSD mastering process. In particular, for the DSD mastering, we used "Esoteric Mastering." We deployed ESOTERIC's top-of-the-line equipment-the Master Sound Discrete DAC and Master Sound Discrete Clock-which had been meticulously calibrated. Furthermore, by generously using MEXCEL cables, we were able to capture the information contained in the original master on disc with a spacious, expansive sound.
The newly mastered sound brings out every detail from the master with remarkable precision. The overall density of the sound has increased significantly, resulting in a finish where every instrument is well-defined while offering a rich variety of expressions and timbres. This is immediately apparent just by listening to the guitar in "In the Wee Small Hours..." following the opening track, "Charade." The tones of Jim Hall and Kenny Burrell... you can clearly hear the difference between them. The touch of their right hands is meticulously captured, and you can almost visualize their picking techniques. The piano's touch is also crystal clear, and while the bass is strictly in a supporting role, its pitch is sharp and well-defined, maintaining a strong presence despite its understated nature. And then there are the drums. The exquisite balance of volume remains unchanged, but their presence has increased severalfold. The sound of the snare being brushed is beautifully tight, and you can sense the distinct movements of each hand. A sense of realism has emerged-it's as if you can see the size of the drum set, and you get the impression that the cymbal stands are made of sturdy metal. With Illinois Jacquet's saxophone, it feels as though you can almost hear the breath escaping from the mouthpiece. But what captivated me most of all was Hartman's singing voice. I had thought of it as a soft, gentle voice, but I realized that this resonance now possesses an added depth, and that it harbors a rich variety of vocal nuances-from the vibrato in her throat to the moments of tension in her voice. The sound fully justifies the description of a "deep baritone voice," and this release represents a faithful reproduction from the master of an outstanding jazz vocal recording from the 1960s-a period when stereo recording became standard practice in the jazz world.
