三代目山口組がまだ勃興期であった1959年、山本次郎は田岡一雄組長から盃を受けた。喧嘩で7人を刺し、1人を殺した一匹狼のワルに対し、田岡は「原爆を抱え込んだようなもんだな」と笑った。次郎の凶暴さは地元・神戸のヤクザや警察さえ怯えさせた。しかし殺しの次郎は同時に仏の次郎でもあった。後年、次郎は「宝塚地蔵園」を自費で開設、父母に孝養を説いた。また鎧兜(よろいかぶと)で旧農林省に乗り込み、食管法をつぶすべく1人だけのデモを掛けたりしている。この異色のヤクザは田岡を尊敬すること深く、またその一徹さを信じた田岡も終生次郎を心の頼みとした。
