While praised as an aesthetic art animation, this work has also been described as enigmatic. This unprecedented book allows readers to sensorially perceive the director's deep thoughts and imagination at the time of production, scene by scene. At the end of the book, 100 detailed interviews with director Oshii regarding each scene are included.
