音楽のバロック時代は別名"通奏低音の時代"とも言われ、編成の規模に寄らず、低音楽器と和音楽器の組み合わせによる通奏低音が音楽を特徴づけており、これを伴わないのは一部の無伴奏器楽作品などに限られていた。やがて古典派の時代に移行するにつれ、音楽の嗜好や演奏形態の変化、楽器の性能や奏者の技術の向上に伴い、低音に和音楽器を使わない演奏スタイルが徐々に広まりはじめる。このアルバムはそんな過渡期に生まれた音楽を、当時のイタリアにおける新しい演奏習慣に従い和音楽器を伴わないヴァイオリンとチェロだけのデュオで演奏、さらに後年の二重奏曲やどちらかの無伴奏作品も盛り込んだアルバム。
