A Pale View of Hills

The film is an official selection in the Un Certain Regard section of the 78th Cannes Film Festival. A masterpiece by Nobel Prize in Literature laureate Kazuo Ishiguro has been adapted into a film with a lavish ensemble cast featuring Suzu Hirose, Fumi Nikaido, and Yoh Yoshida. Niki, who has a Japanese mother and an English father and has dropped out of university to become a writer, wants to turn into a work the half life of her mother Etsuko, who moved from postwar Nagasaki to England. At her daughter's request, Etsuko begins to speak about memories of the past that she has long kept to herself. What she relates is a summer of memories spent with a woman named Sachiko and her young daughter, whom she met in a lively Nagasaki full of energy during the postwar reconstruction period. Niki is shaken as she listens to her mother's story for the first time, but something feels wrong. She gradually becomes aware of the lie hidden in the story Etsuko is telling and eventually arrives at an unexpected truth.
