Back in the 70's and 80's, movies based on DC Comics were huge silverscreen successes (Batman & Superman) while Marvel-based shows were strictly relegated to television and B-movie status. The tide has changed big tiime in the late 90's with the releases of X-Men, Blade I & II, Spider-Man, and soon-to-be-released Daredevil, with more to come including the sequels to the films mentioned and even longer-awaited Fantastic Four! Spidey, in particular, is a favourite character among many created by the legendary Marvel Comics guru Stan Lee. We like him because Peter Parker doesn't start out like a big superhero who, not unlike the hobbit Frodo Baggins, is a regular little guy who hates confrontations, but is given tremendous powers (including the famous spidey senses) after an accident, and chooses to use them for the good of the world. Many good choices were made for the film, and among them two stand out. One is the choice of actor Tobey Maguire to portray Peter Parker. Maguire is a serious, yet versatile actor, and posseses qualities required to inject lives into both Petey and Spidey. The other inspired choice is Sam Raimi as the director. Though best known for the "Evil Dead" horror-comedy series, his 1990 sleeper hit "Darkman" was a superhero movie based on Raimi's original story, that looked almost like a Marvel-based flick.
