What Are Tsukiji Gindako & Takoyaki ?

Tsukiji Gindako is a popular Japanese chain known for its delicious takoyaki - a savory snack made from dough and typically filled with octopus, among other ingredients.

Takoyaki itself is a beloved Japanese street food, particularly in Osaka, made by grilling batter-filled balls in a special takoyaki grill pan. These balls contain small pieces of octopus, pickled ginger, green onions, and sometimes tempura bits for added texture. After grilling, they are typically topped with:

  • Takoyaki sauce: A savory, slightly sweet sauce similar to Worcestershire sauce.
  • Aonori: Dried seaweed flakes.
  • Katsuobushi: Shavings of dried bonito fish, which dance when hot sauce is applied.
  • Japanese mayonnaise: Often drizzled over the top for richness.

Naked Takoyaki

In Osaka, there are many small shops, most of which are run by a small number of people.
In my childhood, local shops in towns were mostly run by middle-aged neighborhood owners, who were affectionately called 'Occhan' (Uncle) or 'Obachan' (Aunt) by the locals.
I'm not sure if those kinds of good-old-days shops still remain.

While most people enjoy ready-made takoyaki from these shops, some also like to make it at home, holding what’s known as a "Takopa" (Takoyaki Party).

The traditional style of takoyaki in Osaka, where the dish originated, is soft both on the outside and inside.
However, Tsukiji Gindako is famous for its crispy exterior and soft, gooey interior.

There are sometimes heated debates between fans of traditional soft takoyaki and those who prefer the crispy version, like Tsukiji Gindako’s style.
As someone born and raised in Osaka, I’m firmly in the soft-takoyaki-loving camp… though I must admit, I do enjoy the crispy version too.

Unfortunately, takoyaki is only available at physical stores or as frozen food, so we can't deliver it to you. But if you ever visit Japan, I highly recommend trying it!
