Excellent movie from Ghibli studios. This movie fits more to the shoujo category than to a fantasy/adventure like most of Ghibli's movies. The main point of this piece of art is to depict the daily life of a young girl trying to find a direction in her life. It's pretty much a slice of life with some romance added in and there's no big adventures nor actions. I believe I could say that this movie has less action than "Tonari no Totoro" but this is not a bad thing, this simply shows that this movie's charm is elsewhere. And where is it? IMO it's on the daily actions that are depicted. The story told here could happen to anyone and I believe this is the also another big charm of it. If you're looking for a warm romance to watch while relaxing this is a good choice. Probably one of the best that Ghibli can offer.

First, there IS english subtitle on this DVD. A little tricky to find and enable when you don't know how to read the kanji for "English", but they are here. Then, there's the movie itself. I'm so sad this fantastic masterpiece is still widely unknown by most and overlooked by those who do know of its existence. Unlike most Ghibli which features various degree of fight, Mimi wo Sumaseba is only interested in the growing relationship between its 2 main characters. It's a very heart-warming story, more sentimental than any other Ghibli, but it's only natural for a story taken from a shoujo manga. I felt also quite heartbroken when I learned that the main director for this movie died without directing any other work. In France, I grow tired of waiting for the release of an official DVD, so I bought this one instead. Highly recommended for all Ghibli fan.
I saw The Cat Return first, and from seeing that I had to see this movie. I had to see where the Baron came from. The song that Shizuku writes is a catchy song. Like any other Studio Ghibli movie you just get sucked right into it.
