The overall sound of The Royal Scam is pretty good but when you pay $25.00 or better for a cd my opinion is it should be worth the money you spend and this title is not worth it. Not that much on sound and overall quality than the Mini Lp Version and that is disappointing...

Listened to some, Free's Fire and Water, Steely Dan's Royal Scam. Hauled my Oppo 205 into the good listening room. Went back and forth with other CD players. Just like all the MQA things I’ve heard in studios and on other systems, the dislike was fairly immediate. MQA in my experience doesn't reward the long listens. An aural equivalent of a Instagram filter, not brighter, slightly grittier. Super colored. With Steely Dan’s Royal Scam, the music was somehow less thought-provoking... more radio-sounding, if that makes sense. It’s all there but it isn’t. How did they make Steely Dan sound cheesy? Can see fans of EDM and electronic getting into it ... it has an immediate song sell. Like how the old pan and scan worked for movies. MQA sounds like it was created by those with little interest in the soul and intent of music. Sounds great at first but quickly a musical shallowness is revealed. Like it’s all surface. Strange. Each time we preferred the non-MQA "layers" of the CDs on my Esoteric CD player and the Yamaha cs2100. Man, why didn't they just make these SHM-SACDs? The CDs already feature killer-sounding DSD transfers from the master tapes. Of course I feel cheated by MQA. What I get. MQA is not an audiophile format, it adds color, distortion and a false sense of detail.
Here we go. Another proprietary playback technology. Doomed to fail? Beats me. I have the three Steely Dan releases that made it to SACD. I was eagerly waiting for more when Universal cancelled all future SACD's and DVD-A's. Bummer. I have an Oppo UDP-205 that can do the full unfolding of MQA CD's. Might as well give it a try. Guess what? It sounds very, very, very good. Inner detail that rivals SACD. Excellent micro and macro dynamics. Just very musical and listenable. I have The Royal Scam on the original vinyl and the 1999 remastered CD. I like this best. My system is pretty resolving. Krell Class A power. Marin Logan Prodigies. If this CD is typical of how they all will sound I'm a fan. Do I want to pay extra to cover their licensing fees? Of course not. But I want the best available version of all my favorite music so what are you going to do?
