名作との呼び声も高い『スマイラーズ』『チャーマー』に続き、今作もバンド・メンバーでもある盟友ポール・ブライアンがプロデュースを手掛けている。新作でも透明感と温かみを兼ね備えた存在感のあるヴォーカル、文学性と独創性に優れた歌詞世界は新作でももちろん健在だが、前作『チャーマー』が70～80年代の“スーパー・ポップ”の影響を受けたエレクトリック・ギターとキーボードを中心としたポップ・サウンドであったのに対し、今作はアコースティック・ギターやピアノ、ストリングスを中心としたより繊細でオーガニックな美しいサウンドに仕上がっている。ユーモアとウィットを込めたメロウなアルバム・タイトル『メンタル・イルネス』とは裏腹に、聴いているだけで癒される凛とした優しい歌声は、憂う心の処方薬となって聴く人の心をすっと穏やかにしてくれるような楽曲ばかりを収録した珠玉のアルバムの誕生だ。
