近代につくられた神社の中で、明治神宮は、内苑だけでなく外苑が一緒に計画された点で、また皇族から政府高官・一般庶民に至るまで、世の中のあらゆる階層の人が参拝することを前提に計画された点で、特異である。本書は、そこに、「独自性」(ナショナル・アイデンティティ)と「普遍性」(近代化)をともに追求するという、遅れて近代化をはじめた国特有のやり方が象徴的に示されていると見て、内苑と外苑の建築の計画経緯や設計趣旨について、明治神宮蔵の史料などをもとに明らかにしつつ、戦後復興社殿についても考察し、創立時の社殿を含め、「伝統表現」について多くの示唆が得られることを指摘している。
