幕末から明治への列島の歩みは、暗から明への昇華ではない。それは、列強による開国への圧力を前に、尊皇攘夷から尊皇開国への転向とその隠蔽、新政府の正統性の急造を伴いながら、慌しい近代国家建設を余儀なくされる過程であった。しかしそこでは、植民地化への危機感と理不尽への抵抗を糧に、普遍的価値のうえに新社会を構想する思考が、徒手空拳で模索されてもいた。中国や西欧からの輸入ではない、この国に地生えの思考が育まれる契機は、しかし、生みの親でもある対外的「危機感」に圧迫され、皇国主義イデオロギーの席巻という試練のなかで影を潜めていった。帰結の一つは、現在も続く第二極の不在である。本書は、「明治維新」という事後的な枠を通しては見えてこないその思考―幕末的思考―の系譜を、吉田松陰、中岡慎太郎、坂本龍馬、福沢諭吉、中江兆民、北村透谷、夏目漱石、朝河貫一、中里介山らに辿り、その画期性を歴史の行間にあぶりだした精神史的試論である。彼らの未成の思考を紡ぎ直すこと。その今日的意味の切実さを、幕末の人びとの経験は我々に教えている。
