      Puffy's 10th Anniversary Record 5

This record could have been a disaster -- with the exception of "Spike," it is the first record by Puffy to not be mostly produced by one person (past records had been generally produced by either Tamio Okuda or Andy Sturmer). Instead, Ami and Yumi went with a multi-producer approach; oftentimes this kind of approach can result in a bunch of songs with no cohesion. Happily, that is not the case with Splurge. Okuda has several songs here, including the single "Mogura-like," which is propelled by a driving guitar riff and thunderous backbeat. Sturmer, too, is represented by several songs displaying his usual pop-rock genius ("Hajimari no Uta," "Nice Buddy"). Elsewhere, new collaborators include Butch Walker (who continues to work with Ami and Yumi), Jon Spencer, Ken Yokoyama and Kazuyoshi Saito, and the Merrymakers. The songs are all instantly rocking and catchy, but not overly familiar sounding. In addition, Ami and Yumi are in fine form vocally, and each of them even gets their own solo spotlight (something that had been missing from several previous albums). While Yumi shines with the acoustic pop of "Rakuda no Kuni," Ami goes all out punk with Ken Yokoyama on "Security Blanket" (a message to Ami's young daughter). It's not quite a perfect record, but there aren't many better albums in Puffy's discography.

      Addictive Great Album 5

I got addicted to this CD immediately after I bought it almost three years ago. For instance, while driving my car to travel a long distance, I would discover myself listening to this album more than once in a row, repeating it. There is no doubt that people who like to sing along to their favorite CDs would really have a blast listening to this CD. Of course, I would I enjoy that, too, but there are so much fun, nice melodies, cool guitar riffs, a bit of punk, and vocals that are blissfully cute in this album that you get addicted to it just by listening to it. Then I think to myself, and say "Hey, there is absolutely no reason for me to get accused of anything, for totally and completely getting addicted to this album!" So, that's the extent of how much I like this CD. Few years since then, the frequency of how many times I listen to this album has declined, but whenever I listen to songs on this CD, I still think this is really a great album!

      Puffy shoots and scores 5

Puffy's gone and put out an amazing CD for their 10th aniversary. In my humble opinion it's the best yet. The girls just keep getting better. Combining the old (Andy Strummer and Tomio Okuda) with the new (Butch Walker, Dexter Holland, Jon Spencer and others), they've managed to cover the whole spectrum of rock's history. From the Beatlesque ("Radio Tokyo"), an amazing Grateful Dead boogie ("onna mashingan", somewhere Jerry's smiling), the Offspring ("Tokyo, I'm on my way."), Green Day (our little Punk princesses), Yumi's breathy "Zombies" ("Rakuda no Kuni"), the list goes on and on. "Soshun Monogatari" evokes images of Shampoo and Dudley Moore/Peter Cook movies. Groovy baby! "Koi no Etude" and "missing you baby", early 60's girl bands coming from your '57 Chevy convertable's AM radio. Butch Walker's "Shall We Dance?" (my favorite song) proves the 80's can live again. Ami's "Security Blanket" starts out all sweet and innocent before smacking you in the face, grabbing you by the throat, and shaking you silly. And Tomio-san proves he's still got the touch with "Sunday in the park". The last two non-Hi Hi singles are included and complement the CD nicely.
