Practically a Greatest Hits Album 4

An astonishing six songs were hit singles on this, Puffy's first full-length album: "Kore ga Watashi no Ikirumichi," "Ai no Shirushi," "Nehorina Hahorina," "Circuit no Musume," "Nagisa ni Matsuwaru Etc." and "MOTHER." All are really good, and album tracks like "Jet Keisatsu" (a concert favorite), "Haru no Asa," "Tetsugaku" and "DE RIO" all excellent examples of Puffy's retro pop-rock formula. The record, though, isn't perfect. While Puffy's songs often have quotes or bits of other popular songs contained within, things go a bit overboard on this album. "Jet Keisatsu" takes its entire opening from The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again"; "Kore ga Watashi no Ikirumichi" is an obvious pastiche of early Beatles songs (complete with a John Lennon-esque harp solo); and "Kobijin" is largely styled after "Black Sabbath" by Black Sabbath. Also, while the goofy psychadelia of "Cake Is Love" and the slow doom metal of "Kobijin" are entertaining at first, neither song justifies its five-plus minute running time and eventually gets a little boring. Regardless of these small faults, though, this is a really solid record, and not a bad place to start with Puffy.
