第39回日本アカデミー賞優秀賞を10部門で受賞! 日本×トルコ合作映画。壮大なスケールで贈る真実の物語。困難な状況の中にあって名誉や見返りも求めず、ただ目前の人を救おうと行動を起こした125年前の日本人たちと30年前のトルコ人たち。映画は「エルトゥールル号海難事故(以下、エルトゥールル号編)」と「テヘランでの日本人救出(以下、テヘラン救出編)」、二つのエピソードで構成。国境を越えた真の友情を描く感動作!! 監督は「利休にたずねよ」でモントリオール世界映画祭最優秀芸術貢献賞を受賞した田中光敏。――1890年、和歌山県串本町沖。後のトルコであるオスマン帝国の親善使節団を乗せた軍艦エルトゥールル号が座礁して大破、海に投げ出された乗組員500名以上が暴風雨で命を落とす。そうした過酷な状況下で、元紀州藩士の医師・田村元貞(内野聖陽)やその助手を務めるハル(忽那汐里)ら、地元住民が懸命の救援活動に乗り出す。それから時を経たイラン・イラク戦争中の1985年、日本政府は危機的状況を理由にテヘラン在留邦人の救出を断念。そんな中、トルコ政府は彼らのためにある行動を取る。
