真実が明らかになる時、誰もがその"衝撃"にのみこまれる―! アカデミー賞外国語映画賞受賞『ニューシネマ・パラダイス』の伝説のコンビ、監督トルナトーレ×音楽モリコーネが仕掛ける、豪華で知的で刺激的な謎が散りばめられた"極上のミステリー"。――物語の始まりは、ある鑑定依頼。引き受けたのは、天才的鑑定眼をもち、世界中の美術品を仕切る一流鑑定士にして、オークショニアのヴァージル・オールドマン。それは、資産家の両親が亡くなり、屋敷に遺された絵画や家具を査定してほしいという若い女性からの、ごくありふれた依頼のはずだった。ところが──依頼人は嘘の口実を重ねて決して姿を現さない。ヴァージルは不信感を抱くも、屋敷の床にもしそれが本物なら歴史的発見となる、ある美術品の"一部"を見つけ、手を引けなくなる。やがて、彼女が屋敷の隠し部屋で暮らしていることを突き止めたヴァージル。決して部屋から出てこない彼女と壁ごしのやり取りを重ね、我慢できずに姿を覗き見たヴァージルは、美しいその姿にどうしようもなく惹かれていく。ところが、ある日、彼女が忽然と姿を消す─。果たして奇妙な鑑定依頼の本当の目的とは? ヴァージルの鑑定眼は本物か、節穴か? 謎はまだ、入口に過ぎなかった・・・。
