Sushi Manners

Since sushi is enjoyed all over the world now, I'd like to introduce
the proper way to eat sushi.

First of all, I notice many foreigners trying to eat sushi with chopsticks.
There are also many Japanese who eat sushi with chopsticks.
But the proper way is to eat with your fingers.

This is because chopsticks can crumble the rice and ruin the sushi.
I sometimes see foreigners dunking the rice in the soy sauce almost fully soaking the whole thing. But this is a big no-no because the soy sauce can also crumble the rice and make little bits of rice float everywhere in the soy sauce plate.

The proper way is to hold the sushi with your thumb, index finger and middle finger. Turn over the sushi so that only the neta (Topping of sushi) touches the soy sauce. Without turning back the sushi back upwards, take it to your mouth so that the neta will touch your tongue first.

You will be able to enjoy the flavor of the neta better this way.

Do not bite it in half. Most sushi are supposed to be eaten in one bite.
Also, never take of the neta and eat it separately from the rice.

As for ordering, the ideal is to order light colored fish first and then move on to dark colored fish. This is because light colored fish have lighter flavors and can not be fully enjoyed after eating dark colored fish which have more rich flavors.

One last thing. It is not good to wear perfume in sushi bars. Perfume ruins the scent of food. The taste of fresh fish should be fully enjoyed along with the scent.

Now please keep these in mind and enjoy your sushi next time!!

Thanks for the sushi lesson Mana! I thought sushi was really meant to be eaten with chopsticks. I'll make sure not to eat my neta and rice separately.

Ohhhh! So that is the right way to eat sushi, Mana? Thank you so much. Last Friday I went to a japanese night in a club and as you said I ate my 2 sushi rolls with the chopsticks with the afraid of many people see me eat in the "proper way". WHAT A FOOL!!!. It`s impossible to eat sushi with chopsticks and very difficult, too.
Ahhh! if I would had Mana`s lessons before.....

P.S. Your panda roll is so cute!! Thanks for the photo.

but the topping will fall off/flip over if you turn it to have it touch your tongue first right? :O
also will the people in the sushi bars be really offended if you make these mistakes?

Eating with fingers is the proper way but many Japanese also
eat sushi with chopsticks so it is not rude or weird to eat with chopsticks at all.

Nya> When you tip the sushi over you hold the neta and rice together so that
the neta does not fall off. And don't forget to do this with only one hand.

Even when using chopsticks, it is common sense to put the soysauce on the neta and not the rice. If you prefer to use chopsticks, simply tip the sushi sideways, hold it with your chopsticks and dip the neta in the soysauce.
