Now on to my trivia.

According to the old Edo period calendar, spring used to start in February. So on Feb.3rd we celebrate the beginning of spring.
We throw beans at evil demons (actually a poor guy who is willing to disguise as one) and wish for good luck to come in and evil demons to stay out.

Another ritual done this day is to eat Eho-maki. I think a lot of people know what a sushi-roll looks like but usually they are served sliced. Eho-maki is an un-cut sushi roll, maybe the same length as a banana. It is good luck to close your eyes, make a wish and eat the sushi roll towards a lucky direction without speaking a word.

On the news, I've seen many weird celebrations around the world.
Does anyone have unique celebrations in your country?

Wow!!! I just love hearing about Japanese traditions they are so unique and cool!!

My Japanese teacher was talking about Japanese folklore. He said that during thunderstorms, the Oni who create thunder and lightning will reach down from the sky and eat the belly-buttons of children while they sleep.

Therefore, children are to cover up their bellybuttons at night, during thunderstorms, so they won't get eaten..

Is this true Manababy? I love Japanese folklore and traditions!!

We don't have any unique celebrations in my country, or that many celebrations for that matter. Fireworks/Hanabi on Independence Day... children go "trick-or-treating" on Halloween...

Sorry, Mana. I do not have a personal website or blog so this simple customer do not participate in your affiliate program. Good luck for the others!!

And in my country neither have unique celebrations (many traditions and some national holidays... but no more).
As in Japan I suppose you celebrate Valentine`s Day Feb. 14 (the good for me: February is my birthday`s month = Coupon code!! YEAH!! that I can combine with other coupons)

We don't have any strange traditions in Australia. We generally have the same holidays in every state and territory but maybe the strangest thing is that for some holidays the different states celebrate it on different days. I think Queen's birthday is one and also with ANZAC day (where you remember those who fought in wars) only some states have a public holiday if the day falls on a weekend. This year it is on a Saturday so lots of states won't have a holiday but there's two who will have a public holiday on the Monday after :)

Hii!
Hi Manababy! I participate in your affiliate program with my site about Gackt and I read this morning about the extra 2% commission for every sale!

Just to know, is it possible to visit your studios in Tokyo? I'm going to Japan in April *-* I'd really like to see your workplace and thank you for all your great work!
by Takeru : Feb 02,2009
Keri>Yes, you are right! It's just an old saying. A lot of little kids tend to hid their belly buttons whenever they hear a lightning.

I never knew before but I looked it up and found out there was a scientific fact for this. When there is a lightning, warm air gets light and rises up high as cold air comes down. Which means it would get chilly. I guess somebody who knew this told a kid to cover up his tummy because the temperature drops when there is a lightning.

Ken>Yes, yes. Our traditions are very different from other countries. But let me save that for my blog before Valentine's Day.
And Happy Birthday Ken!! When is it?

Kariya>I know it sucks when a holiday falls on a weekend and doesn't give us a day off!! But Japan has improved a lot on the holiday system and mostly moves the holiday to the closest Monday so that we can have a 3-day weekend! This is why CDJapan is closed a lot on Mondays. Sorry guys!"
by Manababy : Feb 02,2009
V>Ya, we have so many weird holidays. Even if it isn't a national holiday where we get a day off, recently everyday started to become some kind of celebration.
So the other day, my co-workers and I were looking up our birthdays and laughed our heads off when I found out that my co-worker's birthday was the day of "Sewers". Sounds like whoever started it ran out of ideas.

Takeru> Hey! Of course you are welcome to come here. We've had customers come to CDJapan in the past and enjoyed their visit!! Please come if it isn't too much trouble for you!!
