Description

芥川賞作家・高井有一による同名小説は、1983年に出版され谷崎潤一郎賞を受賞。終戦間近、当時の東京の庶民の生活を細やかな感性と格調高い文章で丁寧に描写され、戦争という時代を戦場ではなく、庶民の暮らしを繊細に、そしてリアルかつ大胆に描く物語を、『ヴァイブレータ』『共喰い』など数々の作品で男と女のえぐ味とロマンチシズムを見事に表現した、日本を代表する脚本家・荒井晴彦が18年ぶりに監督に挑んだ渾身の一作。主演の里子役に二階堂ふみ。戦争という極限状態のなか「結婚もできないまま、死んでいくのだろうか」という不安な想いと同時に覚悟を決め、傍にいた妻子ある男・市毛との許されぬ恋に突き進む心の葛藤を見事に体現し、圧倒的な存在感を放つ。市毛役には長谷川博己。妻子がいながら里子に惹かれ渇望する男を情熱的に演じきった。そして工藤夕貴、富田靖子、石橋蓮司、奥田瑛二ら豪華実力派俳優が脇をかため、戦時下の激しい空襲と飢餓が迫る恐怖のなかを生きる人々を丹念に描いた人間ドラマ。さらに里子が朗読するのは、戦後を代表する女流詩人茨木のり子の「わたしが一番きれいだったとき」。19歳で終戦を迎え、その時の経験を基に書かれたこの詩の世界観が、強くまっすぐな里子の心情と重なり、深い余韻を残している。
