neolog Utada 5

When you buy this album you will be thinking "this is the one".
I was orginally a fan of hers and this album is just tops the cake.
Her english is fantastic and each of her songs has a story. I will never get tired of her songs.
I hope when she comes back that she will release another english cd.
I recommend to any Hikki fan. <3

neolog Another Crack at the U.S. by Hikki 3

It's been five years since Utada Hikaru tried to break into the American music market with "Exodus"; this time, she played down the experimentation and went with a more radio-friendly R&B/pop sound aimed directly at the mainstream. Does it work? Yes and no.

The lead single, "Come Back to Me," is pretty enough, but it doesn't really come out and grab you. I think it's a bit too laid back; perhaps something a bit more upbeat would have worked better as the album's first single. Elsewhere, songs like "Apple and Cinnamon" and "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence - FYI" are absolutely gorgeous tracks that showcase Utada's voice, and make a pretty compelling argument for owning this album.

A lot has been made of the aggressive, sexually-charged lyrics that make up much of the album (like on "Dirty Desire" and "Poppin'"). While I agree the lyrics aren't the most intelligent, I can look past them -- especially in the case of "Dirty Desire," which is a pretty good track otherwise (and it's not like Utada is the first person to ever have suggestive lyrics in a song). In fact, I kind of like some of the more upbeat R&B numbers; they're generally catchy and get your foot tapping. That being said, songs like "Automatic Part II" just don't really work well, musically or lyrically.

If you compare this record to some of Utada's more popular discs released in Japan, it loses out (some might say badly). Taken on its own, though, it's pleasant enough and can certainly hold its own against other Western pop acts.

neolog Not Quite the One 3

I probably don't need to tell you about the anticipation we loyal English speaking Hikki fans held for the follow-up to her experimental, edgy, hard pop treat Exodus. That's a tough act to follow, but Utada only gets better with age.

The title was my first indication that something was different here. 'This is the One'. She really wanted to break into the public's favour this time. She even said so herself, and said that she wanted to work in a type of music that was popular right now. Top of the line producers were enlisted for the project too. Hikki was going all out.

The only single, Come Back to Me, has a decent hook, but I can't really make up my mind about it. There's something really generic about it, but Hikki always has a touch that makes things stand out a bit, even if her vocal delivery is rocky.

I'm actually pretty torn over this album. I feel like it has two sections: the dark and pained first half, and the annoying, semi-slutty second half. Tracks as darkly engrossing and gorgeously hypnotic as Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence -FYI, Apple and Cinnamon, and This One (Crying Like a Child) sit together and play off each others strengths to make a wonderful listen. Then comes Automatic Part II, which starts to throw things off a bit. I do love the throw-back to her first single, but it's the first in a threesome of quality decline. "Hello my name is Utada like ladidadidadida..." is catchy as hell, but it also makes me cringe. Dirty Desire is almost as bad as it's title. The music isn't without it's charms, but it also feels like a sell-out to me. Even if the lyrics can be hilarious or clever ("I love you long time"). And Poppin' is worst of all. On the noisey side, weird vocals, and just generally grating, this is my least favourite Utada song in a long time. There's something about On and On that feels good. It almost erases those three tracks and reminds us of the rest of the album. It makes me want to start the disc over, and in that way is a good closer.

But there's more! We're also given three Kingdom Hearts bonus tracks. I'm very grateful to have an official Utada release for these tracks, even if they have nothing to do with the album. They remind us of Hikki's genius and talent as an interesting and original artist. If I had never heard Utada before I picked up this album, it would be these tracks that would most interest me and puch me to find out more about her. This is actually one of the only times I can think of that the 'Bonus Track' label is completely appropriate. I'm glad they didn't try to integrate them into the main album.

So basically, I'm undecided. It took me some time to get into this album to begin with, but it really has some great tracks. Even if they are in a fairly overdone style. The tracks I don't like, I really don't like, but they also have charming bits. The tracklist is well laid-out and the journey is fluid.

But still, there is something that keeps me from committing to this CD. I guess we'll have to see how it stands with time.

neolog Second inter album from Utada. 3

I hadn't known that Utada released her new album until I saw one at my local music store.

This album quality is the same as other R&B genre from other artists. The songs' lyrics are more heavy and dirty than her first album. Tell the truth her first inter album is better than this album. The first is very unique although it is R&B, hiphop etc. as this album.

As Utada fan, I'm little disappointed but people who like R&B songs. This album won't make you regret.

neolog This REALLY Is The One!! 4

Utada's highly anticipated english album! This really is a breakthrough compared to her first english album.

There are song here that I did not enjoyed but they grew on me, every single track is GOOD. The only thing the album lacks is variety but I personally do not mind.

I am disappointed in Utada lack of promotional efforts for the album. Utada also cancelled her promotions due to a tonsil infection but it seems like those promotions are not going to happen anymore which really disappoints me. I know some of you will say its because she is sick and all and I understand, it's just a feeling I have.

In a way I felt tricked into buying the album because it's like she says she coming so I buy a copy so she can sign it but then she ends up not coming. I'm upset because I bought the album on iTunes already.

Anyways here are my reviews for the tracks.

Come Back To Me - Very nice songs. Very sad and deep and love the melody. The beginning really threw me off on how the track would be like. (4.5/5)

Me Muero - Something different from all the other tracks. I love how she sings the song and the lyrics. (5/5)

Apple And Cinnamon - I like this song a lot. It is one of my favorite tracks in the album. The second half of the chorus is probably one of the deepest part in the song lyric wise. (5/5)

Taking My Money Back - I love how she sung this song. There really isn't much to say about this track. The song is about her taking her money back from her lover who treated her bad. (4.5/5)

This One (Crying Like A Child) - I love this song. I actually did a project with this song where I had to analyze the lyrics and its pretty amazing at how poetic this song really is. My only probably with this song is how she sings "You got me crying like a child" but I still love the song in general. (5/5)

Automatic Part II - One of the songs that kind of grew on me. It's upbeat and it is kind of like an introduction of herself. (4/5)

Dirty Desire - This song has VERY clever lyrics, its explict and implict. GOOD SONG. (5/5)

Poppin' - The other song that grew on me. The only problem I have with this song is the chorus but the lyrics in the chorus are pretty catchy. (3.5/5)

On and On - Upbeat with a light club feel to it. The lyrics are pretty enjoyable. (4/5)

neolog This is really the one ? 2

Long-awaited second album release from Utada... Well maybe for the US fans yeah, but other parts of the planet, maybe not so much.

Her first US debut album "Exodus" was kinda disapointing and had a terrible promotion. It was too much different from the original Hikki's style and a lot of people couldn't follow with that. But still the album had some experimental touch and some really catchy song like Kremlin Dusk. But it wasn't enough.

So what about This Is The One ? Style as changed since Exodus, no more experimental sound, please introduce the pure American pop music...

For me, only 3 songs are good enough to be quoted here : FYI - Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, This One (Crying Like A Child) and Apple & Cinnamon. And don't get fouled by the title "Automatic Part II", that thing is a big joke !

This album changes style but result the same than the first experience. Really bad promotion again (they tried little bit but... Naaaa) and only few songs really stand out from the others. Still not enough to get the fans satisfied, finally everybody wants Utada to come back in Japan as the real Hikki, natural and talented.

neolog This Isn't Quite The One 3

Utada's second English album (not counting her original "Cubic U" debut) features an array of different sounds, with some catchy lyrics and great melodies, but not all of them carry an equal weight. My favorite tune of the bunch is probably "Apples and Cinnamon," but the titular "This Is The One (Crying Like a Child)" is pretty amazing too, especially when you really listen to the story behind the lyrics. Especially interesting is "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence - FYI," which samples from the track of the same name (the "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence" part, a movie that was also released under the name "Furyo;" the vocal track of that same song is called "Forbidden Colors")

Some of the other songs though, like "Dirty Desire" and "Poppin'" just make it seem as though Utada's trying to shoehorn herself into a genre she doesn't fit in, at least where the American market is concerned: these are stereotypically "poppy" songs about sex and dancing. Sadder still, "Automatic Pt. 2" shares very little in common with the original song that propelled Utada into acclaim. The lyrics aren't interesting, the melody is blase: it's not "Automatic" in English, that's for sure.

Overall, it's not as incredible as her debut English album "Exodus," but the few gems on it are worth listening to again and again.

neolog Is this the ONE? 2

Utada Hikaru has decided to record another US studio album, this time making sure it's less experimental and more poppy.

Sure, the album is less experimental and should blend with the other American albums pretty well, but it lacks the Hikaru factor, at least most of the songs do. Even though the lyrics are really well written, most of the songs lack something her Japanese ones have.

Of course, not all the songs are supposed to be meaningful and some should only be fun, however, the only songs that I would consider up to her standards on This Is The One are "This One (Crying Like A Child)", "Me Muero" while "FYI - Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence" and "Apple & Cinnamon" are pretty good too.

The leading track "Come Back To Me" is a generic R'n'B ballad that really doesn't bring anything new to the whole story of American popular music, even though it has a nice piano melody.

To conclude this, the album could be fun to listen to, the lyrics are kinda playful and you will most likely have some of the songs stuck in your head for a while. She sure managed to make a pop album. The question is, is it really that good?

The Album You've Been Waiting For 4

If you were dissipointed by Exodus don't hesitate to pick this album up. It's 100% better. First off, the Japanese version( advertised here) is slightly different than the American overseas version. Instead of the Simple And Clean, Passion( Opening&Ending) songs you get remixes for Come Back to Me which are pretty cool. Also the other tracks come in slightly different order on the American version. I'd say this is the better buy, although it's more expensive. You get the small bonus lyrics booklet with this and I don't much care for the Kingdome Hearts songs sung in english anyways since their Japanese versions are so much better. A few things about this album: First off don't expect to hear the usuall stuff Utada sings. The lyrics are a little bolder and show off a different side of her. The music plays it a little on the safe side too. No creative synth pop here. However it's still a good album worth the wait and fun to listen to. It's for long term Utada fans I think.

different, but it's still good! 4

The beats are not really as usual, and the lyrics are american-ish, yeah
but that is juste another side of Utada, don't miss this one just because the style is different!

be open minded and you will like it ^^

hmmmmmm? 4

Love utada, waited an age for a full english written album and umm meh? while I really like the album, it failed to follow previous album traits and well meh, poppin' is absolutely awful.

Then again this was produced by LA reid, says it all I suppose.

This Is The One 5

Utada never ceases to amaze me with her talent.

Many people say that this album is not good, that the songs are not original... I can't help but disagree. Her style is different when she sings in English, and it's great because it proves that she is good with every genre she tries. Different genres are good too!

I like all the songs on this album. The lyrics are amazing and the beats catchy. My favorite tracks are Apple & Cinnamon, This One (Crying Like A Child), and Poppin'. As a whole, I think this album is better than Exodus, even if it is very good, too.

Utada has very good reasons to be proud of this album.

This May be the One. 4

When i first heard this album online i thought this album was not that good. but i was like maybe i should just wait for my copy to come in and then i could judge, and you know what...... it wasn't as bad as i thought it would be.This album is actually pretty good and i think the American audience will like it. some old school fans may not. there is some parts i don't like [like some dirty lyrics] but this album is actually really good. the only track i will not like is Poppin' the rest is pretty much grand =]

No 3, and she's still got it 4

Well, english cd no.3 and Hikaru still has what it takes to prove she's a talent regardless of the language. My fav track is no.3, it feels real. and track 9, but in the end... it is turning into american RnB, which sort of sucks a little. So over all, its very good, but I prefer Exodus (no.2). Cheers.
