Neolog Reviews

Post reviews on Neolog and interact with people from all over the world!

neolog Wonderful! One of Hikki's Best! 5

My initial reaction to this album was "HOLY SHIT O________O AMAZING!!!!!"
After spending much time with this album, I still believe it to be a fantastic pop album. Actually, it's just a little bit beyond pop. Utada Hikaru always has a way of pushing the ideals just a little bit further, and she's done that once again with this album.

I could go on and on and on about how fantastic and amazing all of the tracks on this album are, but you really should just hear it for yourself. It's amazing how far Hikki has come as an artist. To listen to this album alongside her earlier efforts like First Love, it's truly remarkable to see the ground she has covered, and fully realize how much she has grown and matured as a singer, a songwriter and an artist.

The style of this album is very far removed from her other Japanese albums. Ultra Blue is heavy heavy heavy! on the synths. Some songs don't have any real instruments at all (Kairo). In some cases, too much synth would turn incredibly sour incredibly fast, but in Hikki's capable and daring hands, the music sounds lite, clear and refreshing.

Of the album material (which, to be honest, isn't a lot), the real standout is BLUE. The composition paired with the lyrics is fantastic. It starts out light and smooth, but changes into a dramatic chorus filled with doubt, fear, and angst. The melody is beautiful and the instrumentation is fresh and powerful. Such a fantastic song! The unique and fresh feel of this piece is carried throughout the rest of the new album material, but none of them sound redundant of eachother. Hikki's mastery of slightly off kilter pop is better than ever.

The newer singles for this album are all top-notch as well. I spouted off about Be My Last and the glorious Passion in last year's review, and my opinion of them hasn't changed one bit. The newest single Keep Tryin' is an upbeat, fun song that took the synth pop feeling just one step further and really set up the overall sound of the album for the casual listener.

The one downfall of the album is the lack of fresh material. To fans who have been following her career for a while, the majority of the album was heard before the album was even announced. Most people were concerned that COLORS wouldn't fit with the new material more or less because it was so old (it was released in 2003). While I think it could've used a production face-lift to bring it more up to speed with the new material, COLORS does a pretty good job of settling itself on the album. I found the real problem to be Dareka no Negai ga Kanau Koro. As gorgeous as the song is, the abrupt change to completely acoustic piano in the midst of synth electro pop is jarring, and rather disruptive to the flow and overall feeling of the album.
I think it could've worked very well if Dareka... had been somehow turned into an interlude, and Eclipse pulled out into a full song.

Hikki's music never ceases to amaze me. I've said that many times, and it's always true. Since Ultra Blue was released, I've not been able to decide if I like it, Deep River, or Exodus the most. The main issue with choosing a favourite album from her, is that they are all so completely different. She hasn't stopped evolving, and I can't wait to see where she'll go from here.

neolog Hikki is back! 5

The best album after "First Love"!
In this album Hikki pick a style more Electro/Pop than her classic R&B.
This album is a MUST HAVE and I recommend you to listen if you want discover this great singer.

Ultra Blue is a great album 5

This is one of Utada's greatest albums.
This is Love starts off the album with it's keyboard introduction and Utada sings the song perfectly. The song however couldn't hold my attention
Keep Tryin' starts off with a radio tuning sound and it kicks in with a magical melody and Utada starts the song off with "I don't care about anything" and the song is great
Blue is a heavy experimental album and it's a great one, but it's a tad long
Sunday Morning is a song that is quite catchy and talks about relaxing on weekends before Monday
Making Love is a beautiful Album Only track that everyone can enjoy.
When Someone's Wish Comes True is a beautiful and sad ballad, singing about how not everyone in the world can be happy. It's one of my favorite songs
Colors is a unique track with beautiful lyrics that flow perfectly
One Night Magic is one of Utada's collaborations, it's a nice track, but Utada steals most of the spotlight
Kairo is a song that focuses more on the instrumentation, really boring.
Wings is a wonderful and great song to listen to
Be My Last is an excellent song, very sad with Utada's tone of voice
Passion is a very heavy experimental track.
Overall a wonderful buy

CAN'T MISS 5

Woah! This album is simply awesome! No one can't miss it! It's her best album after "First Love". Less R&B as previous album, she use more her keyboard in this album. The CD is beautiful.

Just buy it!

ULTRA BLUE Review 5

Utada Hikaru strikes again in an album that shows her versatile musical style. There are a lot of good tracks on this album. My personal favorites are "Keep Tryn'" and "Passion," the second of which is the song used on Kingdom Hearts II. Although my Japanese isn't very good, the lyrics seem to be very positive and uplifting. Honestly, there are some tracks that I skip over at times, but I think that most people have their favorites and least favorites. I am sure that there is something for people of many different tastes, however. There are soft songs like "Nichiyou no Asa" (Sunday Morning) and even ones with an R&B/ near Hip-Hop feel, like "One Night Magic." Again, great album.

Utada Rocks! 5

Utada is one of the best female artists I've ever listened to and I think her voice even sounds original. As soon as she starts to sing you know it's her, and I like that about an artist :)

Another No. 1 Album 5

Again Hikaru Utada give us an incredible album, the first song "This is love" it sounds great, this album is full of colors from the music.

Hiki's Done It again 5

Although I didn't think this album was as good as Deep River this is still a great album for fan's of Hikaru Utada and J-Pop. Songs like Passion and Colors are definately two of her best. This is a great album to listen to if you need a boost or if it's a rainy day or something. I'd buy it before it goes out of print like so many of her other things.

Simply perfect 4

If ever you thought for a minute that Japanese music is weird, guess again. Not in years have I ever fell in love with Utada's music from playing Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2.This is a land mark in her career,"Passion"" is one of my favorit's,not to mention "Be my last".I recommed this albume to anyone that loves great music. Enjoy!

Not liked, but LOVED!!!! 5

Hikaru has done it again. "Kairo" is such a good song, it really touched me. "Passion" is really a powerful song to me. Actually both of them are really powerful. Hikaru always does good with every song, but when she sung "Kairo" and "Passion", she really blew me away, especially with a very powerful and talented voice. Go HIKI!!!!

Wonderful! 5

I wasn't sure how I would feel with so many songs I had heard before but overall this album was superb! Hikaru sings ballads and uptempo music all very well here. My favorite track was probably the opening "This is Love" followed by the title track "Blue" which was a beautiful song. I highly recommend this album to any Utada Hikaru fans!

Utada Hikaru Does It Yet Again! 5

This album is a true delight. On this release, Utada Hikaru takes her electronic style to a whole new level. This album has a really "dreamy" vibe to it.
in my opinion, Ultra Blue and Deep River are Utada Hikaru's best offerings.
