Tokyo Mew Mew vol. 1 starts off the adventure of Momomiya Ichigo, 13 years old. One day, she recieves the DNA of a cat, and soon finds herself having to save the world from aliens! She also begins working part time as a waitress at Cafe Mew Mew. She ends up find 4 more Mew Mew's with the DNA of different animals that join her in the fight and on the job. The setup is your typical magical girl fare, with a monster-of-the-week being finished off by the same attack every episode. In that regard the show is repetitive. However, I think that it's a lot of fun. The characters are likeable, the colors are bright and the story moves at a good pace. Animation-wise, the show looks pretty good. The animation and character designs occassionally look a bit off, but there are also times where it shines. I really like the Mew Mew's transformations (especially Mint's), outfits and attacks. I don't really mind having to watch them every episode. The opening and ending themes are fun and upbeat. Overall, Tokyo Mew Mew is a cut above the average magical girl show. It's totally worth checking out, especially since you get 6 episodes a disc for the first eight volumes. Recommended.
