"歴史"に立ち合う4時間37分。監督は『怪談』『切腹』でカンヌ国際映画祭審査員特別賞を受賞した巨匠・小林正樹。ナレーターは名優・佐藤慶。第26回ブルーリボン賞作品賞受賞。1985年ベルリン国際映画祭国際映画批評家協会賞受賞。 ――昭和二十一年一月二十二日。ポツダム宣言にもとづいて、連合軍最高司令官マッカーサー元帥が、極東国際軍事裁判所条例を発布し、戦争そのものに責任のある主要戦犯を審理することとした。戦後日本の進路を運命づけた"東京裁判"正式名称"極東国際軍事裁判"である。満州事変から支那事変、太平洋戦争におよぶ十七年八ヶ月間、日本を支配した指導者百名以上の戦犯容疑者の中から、二十八名が被告に指定され、法廷は、市ヶ谷の旧陸軍省参謀本部、現在の自衛隊市ヶ谷駐屯地に用意された。
