In Japan, animation movies from ghibli studios are considered masterpieces. It was first in this movie when american (and worldwide) audience finally noticed for the first time the quality of japanese cinematographic industry. This version in particular has audio tracks for different languages, which makes a very interesting experience. Personally I like to see the differences between the versions of languages I speak (spanish, english and japanese) so I learn more even about my native language (spanish).

Customer Reviews
'Princess Mononoke' is one of the best Japanese films of the 90s. That, at least, is the opinion in Japan (where it was a huge critical and commercial success), and if you're not interested in what the Japanese think you're not going to like this film. Because whatever else it is -- and for my money it's one of the best films of the 90s, period -- 'Mononoke' is very Japanese: rice wine and sushi in an age when most movies are nothing more than (eye) candy, it's strange, beautiful and potent. Admittedly, the downbeat conclusion makes for a hangover of sorts, but no-one who made it through 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' should have any problems. In fact, at the risk of sounding like a film poster quote, if you liked 'Tiger' (and/or 'The Lord of the Rings') you'll love -- well, at the very least you should watch! -- 'Princess Mononoke'. Just remember that Japanophobes need not bother.
