Railway Story～新世界鉄道ロマン紀行～シリーズ第2弾!! 新疆ウイグル自治区は天山を境にして北部と南部に分かれているが、トルファンからウルムチを抜け、天山の北麓に沿って西進するルートが天山北路。蘭新線と南疆線の分岐駅のあるトルファンは、西遊記に登場する火焔山など観光スポットが多い。トルファン盆地の中央に位置する乾燥地帯で、年間降水量がわずか20mm。最高気温が46℃に達する灼熱の気候だが、天山山脈の雪解け水が地下水路のカレーズを通して街を潤している。ウルムチとはモンゴル語で「美しい牧草地」を意味し、ジュンガル盆地の南に位置するオアシス都市で、中国のスイスと呼ばれる天池など美しい自然に恵まれている。解放南路沿いの国際大バザールも有名。
