高畑勲の長編監督デビュー作、待望のBlu-ray化!! 1968年"東映まんがパレード(東映まんがまつり)"で公開された長編アニメーション。本作が長編アニーションの監督デビューとなった高畑勲による演出に加え、場面設計・原画に宮崎駿、作画監督に大塚康生、原画に森康二といった当時の東映動画スタジオの精鋭スタッフが手掛けた長編アニメーション。太陽の剣を託された少年ホルスが、少女ヒルダや動物たちと出会い、悪魔と戦うために村人と団結する冒険物語。一貫したテーマ、登場人物の心の葛藤、幻想的な映像表現など大人の鑑賞に堪える傑作と評価を受けた。総作画枚数150,000枚、平幹二朗、市原悦子らの豪華俳優による共演も見逃せない。東映動画(現・東映アニメーション)創立20周年記念作品。――岩の巨人モーグから"太陽の剣"とよばれる名剣を手に入れ、人間たちを脅かす悪魔グルンワルドを退治するために旅に出たホルスは悪魔に狙われた村を救い、そこでホルスは可憐な美少女ヒルダに出会うが・・・。
