      Powerful Album! 4

Light Bringers album 'Scenes of Infinity' delivers a fast well composed album. The album departs from many of the traditional Japanese rock influences and indulge in more prog, power metal and jazz styles. Fans of speed metal will also enjoy the fast paced nature of the album. The vocals are extremely powerful and a definite improvement over previous releases. The album always features guitar verse keyboard sections, reaching it's zenith during the instrumental track Eau Rouge. The album marks a change of direction for the band which may discern some fans but on it's own, the album is a masterpiece!

      Light Bringer Self-Destructs 3

After the rock masterpiece that was "Genesis" I had high hopes for "Scenes of Infinity," but they quickly faded. What I didn't know until later is that Light Bringer has self-destructed in the same way as another favorite band, the ShakaLabbits: By kicking outstanding, irreplaceable musicians out of the band. When the 'Labbits got rid of King-san, it was as bad as if Judy and Mary had gotten rid of Onda-san, or maybe if the Beatles had gotten rid of McCartney. I fear the Labbits will never be the same, sadly. The LB lineup that produced punchy rock with great, memorable songs like "Ark" and "Noah" had the chemistry, complexity and songwriting skill of Rush and Dream Theater, but that chemistry died with the ouster of guitarist Seiya and drummer Satoru. My first impression of "Scenes of Infinity" was: "Victim of overproduction" - and it is. The production is overbearing - everything is thrown at the wall with sheer nonstop energy, in the hope that something will stick. There's a sense that everything was rushed into the studio before the songs were ready, without the key ingredients that made "Genesis" so good: Memorable melodies and chord progressions, and that disc's fusion of complexity with crisp economy. Fuki has a spectacular voice and she sings wonderfully on this album. The problem is, even great singing can't hide hastily-constructed songs that lack interesting melodies and chord progressions. The songs here are good, but they're not great. It almost sounds like this album is a case of "sophomore jinx," yet it's LB's fourth album, not second - as if they were trying so hard to top "Genesis" that they forgot the essentials. Bassist Billy Sheehan once said that the most important thing in music is to write good, memorable songs before you even think about sitting down to rehearse and record. Light Bringer did that with "Genesis" but they didn't do it here. The only song on "Scenes of Infinity" that's memorable is "Hydrangea," and that doesn't show up until the seventh song out of ten. "Scenes of Infinity" is an ok power rock album, but falls far short of the benchmark the band achieved on "Genesis" and even in some of the songs on "Midnight Circus." I have faint hopes that they will get Seiya and Satoru back, but I fear that Light Bringer, like the 'Labbits, will never be as good as they once were. And that is sad because I loved both bands.
