Based on a comic serial that spun off of the "Project .hack," the new anime series picks up the action 4 years after the PlayStation 2 game left off. While familiar items, such as "bracelet" that enables "data drain" make their appearances, the story evolves around new characters who are twins. Shu-go and Rena, obtain the data of the legendary ".hackers" Kite and Black Rose. The data remained illegal for four years after the "twilight incident" had caused serious havoc in "the World" as well as in the general public in the real world. Rena, who fancies "the World" urges her reluctant twin brother to join her for a game. Soon after they log into the beginners area of "the World," unusual things start happening, opening the door to new ".hack" adventures...
